I’ve been hearing America referred to more and more as the SALAD BOWL rather than the MELTING POT? In the past, People would come here and put their old traditions and beliefs on the back burner and kind of “melt” into our society and way of doing things. Seems nowadays people come here and want everything the way it was in where-ever they came from and have no regard for the American way. (I guess there is no longer a single american way). It seems people no longer “melt” into 1. If we no longer melt into 1 with a common goal, what’s going to become of this country?

Great food for thought! I recently watched a show on Ellis Island and all the people who came through there. One of the things that struck me was how everybody both young and old went to classes to learn to speak english. They wanted to be Americans in every way possible. Today various states and cities have to vote just to make english the official language. All the multiculturalism these days isn’t a bad thing though. It is just another one of the freedoms we enjoy in this country.

OR a fruit cake…..It all sounds so good going in, but comes out leaving a really bad taste in your mouth.

Interesting thought. I have had the discussion numerous times on why English isn’t the official language. The number one arguement is that the US is formed on immigration to a free country, so all the languages have to be respected. When are people going to accept that the US is just like every other country. People migrate to new land and make it what it is. If the early immigrants moved here with the idea of learning the language and culture, then why can’t the immigrants of today. From the beginning, the US has always been the “land of the free.” This of course was based on a common understanding of language and culture. Our founding fathers couldn’t see that one day there would be people that would refute the basic structure. These people are essentially going against the things that this country was founded on, and it is scary. It is sad that our country still lets in and harbors people that try to pollute the foundation of the country. I have two living ancestors that are first-hand immigrants. They have shared with me numerous times about their experiences. All I can say is that I am very glad they came to this country, became a part of the culture, and gave me the life I have today. Amen.

Enough ranting. I need to get a job.
