Lasik?

Anyone who has had this done what can you tell me. I don’t have real bad eyes. I can legally pass the drivers exam without my glasses. But I have enough of an Astimatism that reading signs is hard and shooting etc… is annoying. I hate glasses when out fishing and hunting always getting fogged etc… So I end up not wearing them. Would it be worth it to have it done so I could actually see clear? Those who have had it done was it worth it?

I looked into Lasik and found that it did’nt fix what I wanted most out of it. That is having my close up along with a distance correction. They were going to correct one for close up and the other for my distance. It was a trial and error deal…….I decided agaist it and went in and had a set of mono vision contacts fitted. I have been pretty happy since!!! It allows me to fish, see the distances needed and tie fish hooks!!!
I still might re-visit Lasik again someday, but for now the mono-contacts work just fine…..

    hope this helps

My wife had Lasik done about 3 months ago, when she went into the room to have the procedure she couldn’t even tell if there was a clock on the wall. Less than 10 minutes later she could read what time it said from across the room. She had it done in Maple Grove. Very close to Gander Mountain, and cabelas. They offer a free consultation to see if you are a good canidate, no pressure applied if you are. A little hint, over 80 % of there business is referals. My wife got a 50% off coupon from a friend of hers. The rest I got to put on my Cabelas card. I can almost see that pretty blue St croix rod! Her only regret is that she didn’t do it years ago. I had 20/900 (that is not a typo)vision – so bad that I would have to hold normal print so close to my eyes to see it, I had to close one eye or else my eyes would cross. Wore glasses as thick as coke bottle bottoms since 4 years old. In 1998, I had Lasik. I am at 20/20 ever since and consider it the finest $4K I have ever spent. Ever. I could have shopped around and found cheaper, but I thought that my eyes were not where I wanted bargain work done. I went with what was reported to be the best doc at the time and paid for it – VERY HAPPILY!!!!

i had it done this past spring. what a difference !! my eyes were bad and could not see without glasses or contacts. i wish i had it done sooner. i had excellent results!! just do some research and get the free initial exam done to see if it would benefit you. I would do it agian. FYI – just remember your eyes can/will change in the future which may lead to another surgery or glasses again. I had it done in Maple Grove as well.

It is the best investment I have ever made. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I would seriously consider the Crosby Eye Clinic. I check out many places before I had mine done and I will recommed Dr. Poland at the Crosby Eye Clinic. They have an office in Baxter as well as Crosby and he does an excellent job. He was doing Lasik in MN long before any of the others were. They must do a lot of people in a year, because the same day I had mine done, there were about 15 other people there getting the same thing done. It takes about 10 minutes and then you feel like you have sand in your eyes for a day and then you are happy!!!!!!

I had Lasek almost 2 years ago and feel it is the best investment I have done also. key word with mine is the spelling my surgery was different then Lasik, due to a hereditary gene in my family. but I play ball, bowl and hunt and fish. It is so nice to be able to wake up in the middle of the night and be able to see what is happening without having to grab glasses. I hated my contacts, always issues as I used to have dry eyes. and that actually, for some reason, cleared up when I had my surgery. Mine was done by my actual eye doctor which was really nice. he is located in Fridley and did the surgery at Phillips Eye. also he showed me the pros and cons of both types of surgery, and that the price is the same and such so there is not a “cheaper” choice. If you have further questions let me know and I will answer when I can. PM me or reply here. and do not ask sliderfshn as he will say it did not help me with some of the plays I had during ball this year.

My wife really wants Lasik, but I do not believe our insurance covers it because they consider it cosmetic. Is this true in most of your cases.

We were talking about it last night because she was yelling at me because I want a new boat with a hyperdrive mud motor. She was saying that she wants new bedroom furniture and Lasik eye surgery. If I could figure out how to run it through insurance, we could do both. Has anyone gotten it covered through insurance? I don’t mind given up toys for surgery, but was just wondering if anything is changing with coverages.

That had nothing to do with your eyes

I figured that I better clear up my reply.

Are you referring to the Brail “seeing” techniques he learned at the school for the blind?

I’d love to be able to have the surgery but I have a rare type of asigmatism that only 1 in 300+ people have where the repairs need to be done to the inside of my lenses rather than on the outside. I finally was able to use contacts once they came out with the torric ones but then I tore both lens covers so no more contacts. I guess it is glasses the rest of my life unless they come up with a new type of surgery. My eye doctor told me last year that I have 20/20 vision. I asked her how that could be when I had to wear glasses. She told me that I had 20/20 in both eyes but that I had to wear corrective lenses due to my being nearsighted????????????? Now that is a crock if I’ve ever heard one.

It’s the best $2800.00 I’ve ever spent. As an outdoors person, I can’t imagine ever going back to glasses and the all the hassle. I had this done by Dr. Whiting in Maple Grove at Lasik Plus 2 years ago. I had the surgery at 4PM, left the office. Had some minor discomfort on the way home with the setting sun. Locked myself in the bedroom and pulled the shades. Slept until 9PM(take the valium if they offer ). Got up, could see, but very watery eyes. Went back to sleep, got up at 5AM and drove to work like a normal day. I haven’t looked back since.

PM me if you want to discuss more.

My night vision kinda sucks. Especailly at twinight, like sitting in the woods until dark. I get light scatter from anything bright, things like people standing in front of windows, theor faces get kinda whited over. I see halos and starbusrts off lights at night, worse than I did with contacts. And I got a rash of floaters right after the surgery. Had some since high school, but got, oh I don’t even know, 500% more after LASIK.

I had the all laser flap and the wavefront LASIK, which is supposedly the best, but I still got problems. I had much better vision with my contacts, and would take that over what I have now in a second. If I had to have this or wear glasses all the time, it would be a much tougher choice, I still might take this. Wearing glasses all the time has alot of suckiness to it as well.

Actually she explained to me that my 20/20 vision had to do with my eyes working the way they are supposed to but that because of the bad curvature on the inside of my lenses I required corrective lenses so that I am able to focus on distant objects. She is a very reputable Opthamologist at the best medical clinic here in Dubuque. Being an outdoorsman I would much rather not have to wear glasses. Not having to deal with rain or snow getting on my lenses would be great plus I wouldn’t have to remove my glasses all the time to use my binoculars which is a real pain. I did this the last time I sat in one of my treestands and dropped my glasses. I had to unhook my safety harness and climb down, get the glasses and climb back up the tree. When I got back up and all ready I noticed that I had dropped a glove on my way back up the tree so down again I went. Next time I get to a pharmacy I will pick up one of those cords that keep your glasses around your neck for when I’m hunting.

mossboss, just out of curiosity, do you or anyone in your family have a gene called “keloid”? as that was the reason I was unable to have Lasik and had to have Lasek. Keloid is a gene that makes scares that are not on stretchy skin to heal out instead of flat, or at least that is the case that I have. how long was your healing time?

I have no idea. Is there a test for “keloid”? Any other signes I would know, like certain types of scars elsewhere?

Healing time was pretty long I guess, I don’t know, 2 months? During the LASIK flap creation my bubbles in the flap interface took forever to dissolve, which may have contributed as well.

Not sure about the tests and stuff. My healing was 1 month or so per eye, give or takea week or 2. so technically either 1 to 1 1/2 months to heal. as for keloid. if you had your grand parents or parents would know I think. I got mine from my mom’s side. See my doctor did the flap and light lazer and such. just weird that you had issues, as like you said that one is safer then the other surgery. I wish there was more I could do to help you figure it out. I know my doctor said that they would do “touch up” if needed to fix issues, but my guess is you probably do not want to go any where near another eye doctor.

I’ve seen two other specialists since the surgery (2 years, 9 months ago), and they really don’t have any answers as to exactly what is or what went wrong, so there is really nothing to do to fix it. I guess I got what I got. As long as it doesn’t get worse, I can live with it.

I did learn one thing. There may be only 5% of LASIK people with problems, but if you are one of the 5%, it is 100% of a problem for you.

That stinks, And to have that happen to where you have seen others that can’t help either. I do have a lady that is having the same issue here also. she each eye done different so she could see far in one and near in teh other and has had issues to. I will check with her and if she has any info I think can help you I will post for you.

Best investment I ever made for both my Wife and I. How many times do you spend a couple of grand on something you really don’t “need”, for once, blow the cash on something that will affect your life everday and the benefits are long term.
Had ours done in Edina, would do it again in a heartbeat!

Most all people seem to have good luck with lasik. However if you’re the one that something doesn’t go just right… For some it’s definitely worth it. For others the risks outweigh the benefits. A lot of people I know that had the surgery say it was well worth it, but they have small issues such as halos or worse twilight vision than previously with corrective lenses.

I am looking at Lasik Plus in Woodbury, or St. Paul Eye clinic in Oakdale. I am not sure, they both seem good. I am going to see both and decide than. I don’t have bad vision I can see fine without glasses but like stated enough of an astignmatism to be annoying when driving, reading and hunting. My doctor said before I could have it done on both eyes. However said I may be able to get by with only one eye. However I would opt for both I think?
