WOW.. That looks awesome. 11 people die… Holy-moly
This is a must watch – at least once.
November 22, 2006 at 12:26 am #501946You are right….that is pretty good. I caught most of the first show. Speaking of good shows….you gotta like Mike Rowe in Dirty Jobs.
November 22, 2006 at 12:30 am #502005I also watched the first episode. The people who attempt and actually reach the summit are as mentally tough as they come. I will be watching the show tonight as well
November 22, 2006 at 1:36 am #502034Diry Jobs is a great show!!
When is Everest on? That sounds like an interesting show.
November 22, 2006 at 2:42 am #502088I am watching this right now…OH MY GAWD!!!!!
Dude, that is messed up!
November 22, 2006 at 2:43 am #502013Definitely nuts. The temp is -40 I love cold, but that is a little overboard
November 22, 2006 at 2:44 am #502090How about the guy with swelling of the brain, and his friggin’ eyes are popping out?
November 22, 2006 at 2:44 am #502091Messed up ain’t the word for that! Did you see that guy suffering from the brain swelling? That show is unreal…
November 22, 2006 at 4:45 am #502147You people have problems. Why would anyone want to watch people die? If you have ever seen people die, at least more than a couple times you might realize that it is not cool, just a fact of life. The killing or dying of animals and the killing and dying of Human Beings is completely different in my STRONG opinion, even if they die due to their own dumb notions.
November 22, 2006 at 5:14 am #502154Thanks for your opinion. They dont actually show people dying. This is the Discovery channel, not Al Jazeera.
Anyways,Some interesting facts about the show.
Each member of the American team paid $40,000 each to summit. And its non-refundable. The fireman from LA mortgaged his house to pay for his trip.
Everest is only climbable two weeks out of the year. Thats why 600 people are trying to summit at once.
Everest is 5 miles above sea level. 14,000 feet higher than the Rockies. One member of the American team has no legs. He lost them 22 years ago trying to summit Everest. I also give the biker guy alot of credit, but the Marlboro’s are catching up to him.
2Fishy4UPosts: 973November 22, 2006 at 2:43 pm #502280I believe the show is based on a book entitled “Into Thin Air” which was a number 1 bestseller a few years back. The book goes into much greater detail then the film and is absolutely fascinating.
It discusses the commercialization of climbing Everest, and what has happened subsequent to the disaster that aired last night. The bottom line is there are far to many inexperienced folks paying $$$ to climb Everest.
Well worth a read.
November 22, 2006 at 5:39 pm #502396I’ve always wondered what it is that makes people like that tick. It’s simply amazing what people will do.
November 22, 2006 at 10:27 pm #502513This is a different group of climbers than the “Into Thin Air” group, but yes, I think it came about as a result of that trajedy. Sir Edmond Hillary claims to be the first to reach the summit of Mt. Everest…when looked into further, they think his sherpa actually reached the top first. Sr. Edmond had the $$$ so he claimed the prize. They asked him once why he wanted to climb Mt. Everest and he said, “because it is there!” It definitely takes a different mentality to climb in those conditions. The commercialization of climbing has grown out of this world. $$$ talks and B.S. walks. More than 1/2 of the people climbing everest have no business being there. All in all, a great documentary. Ted
November 22, 2006 at 10:34 pm #502514Speaking of the Sherpa’s. Those guys are amazing. You look at all the climber’s struggling just to make it up the mountain once. The Sherpa’s are making multiple trips up and down the mountain with packs FULL of gear. That to me is amazing.
Also, the stories behind a few of the climber’s is also amazing. The fireman with 2 artificial legs, the “biker” dude with more metal in his body than I have ever seen, the guy who had to have his cancerous kidney removed from the front so he could make the climb. All very inspiring stories to say the least. Some may make it and some will not, but the bottomline is this, they all at least tried something that most people wouldn’tDecember 14, 2006 at 3:49 pm #511202Anyone catch this weeks episode? All I can say is I was on the edge of my chair. I cant believe how verticle these guys are getting. Truly amazing. The biker dude is on a suicide mission. Being only 350 feet from the summit and being told to turn around has to be awful. I never understood why these people would even make the attempt, but its clearly a personal goal for these guys.
2Fishy4UPosts: 973December 14, 2006 at 6:58 pm #511290Appreciate your comments. The difference between then and now is the Sherpa’s and Sir Edmund Hillary climbed the mountain without the use of the oxygen tanks. It is now a commercial endeavor, albeit still very dangerous even with the use of oxygen.
December 14, 2006 at 7:05 pm #511295I agree with you 2fishy. I always thought they had to set there own equpment, ropes, tanks, etc. But it seems as if the Sherpas do all the work, and all the people have to do is pony up a ton of money, and walk up a mountain. It is not the accomplishment it once was.
But I guess my glass is half empty

I don’t know. I am sure it’s simpler now, than back in the day, but I think there is a little more to it. That image of the dead guy on the mountain in that last episode kinda burned right into my memory. People are still trying it and losing.December 14, 2006 at 8:26 pm #511342I’m not saying it is easy, just saying the Sherpas do the majority of the work. It is still a dangerous hobby, one you have to be fully commited to.
That and have a bunch of money and the ability to take 6-8 months off of work.
December 14, 2006 at 8:28 pm #511347I agree, I’m just saying to get my fat up that hill would take a lot of work. Not enough sherpas in the world.
December 14, 2006 at 8:48 pm #511373I would much prefer to take the Homer Simpson Approach, and have the Sherpas haul me up the hill while I sleep
That is for all you closet Simpson fans.
