ive got a 92 evinrude 40 horse electric start tiller and was out on the river on saturday when the engine decide to go dead Luckly i was up river and had enough power to get to the landing via the trolling motor. A friend sugested i look for a fuse under the hood. I was wondering if the kill switch go stuck not allowing a restart. Where would i locate a fuse? any suggestions on a fix i hate to bring it in for repair if it just a matter of a fuse or a squirt of wd40. thanks for the insight!

I don’t know about a fuse, but your kill switch wire is yellow and black. Try unplugging that wire from the housing and see if that cranks it up.

Sounds like a coil went bad. If it happened all of a sudden.

most fuses are in the line heading back to the motor, it looks like a clip together fitting – usually black and easy to see in the wire

When you say dead, will it crank over and not fire or, does it not even crank over at all?

Fuse should be in a red colored fuse holder under the cowl.It was a short glass 20 amp on the late 80s motors.

Sounds like the CDI/powerpack could be bad.

I had the same thing happen on my 1990 evinrude tiller. Turned out to be a bad diode. It is like an inline fuse that is in the wire to the starter. Very delicate though, but an easy fix. If you can get over to Nelson Marine in White Bear lake or any reputable shop, ask them to print you out a wiring schematic that shows where the diode is.
Trouble shoot it with a lighted wire tester to both sides of the solenoid and the hot wires while pushing the starter button. (keep clear of the flywheel!)You should be able to find the problem quickly. if it is a diode, just cut out the old section and crimp in the new one and shrink tube it! Hope this helps.

Remove the hood and standing in the boat facing the motor it will be on your right side (red wire) it is a push together fuse carrier. It is about an inch long. Check that tiny fuse. I had same issues this year with mine. Not everyone carrys these fuses I ended up having to go to the Marina for mine but only cost 57 cents. Good place to start. But if it is blown check and make sure you have no bare wires that are getting wet or grounding itself out..
