I have a friend with a Starcraft deep-V, circa 1975, with twin-20’s on it. It’s the only boat I’ve ever seen with that configuration.

Twin motors are very uncommon in SE Minnesota/NE Iowa. There are disadvantages to having two motors, cost being the most obvious; not to mention the inefficiency – one 250 will outrun two 125’s; think about having to cast and work fish around two outboards; plumbing for gas/throttle/etc; and the list goes on.

The only thing that would justify it (and the reason you don’t see it around here IMO) is if you’re fishing big waters – big enough that it’s better to limp home with one broken motor than to die at sea.

Years ago on Mille Lacs you would see twin engines on boats. But with the improvements/reliabity fisherman have shifted from it. I think they tend to use two motors on the bigger waters yet, such as the great lakes, and the gulf waters? You don’t want to break down 25 miles off shore?

On another note, when I was a kid we would water ski behind a 16 ft boat with a 18hp evinrude and 9 1/2 johnson side by side! Adding that 9 1/2 really made a big difference in our hole shot and top end speed!

    It looked kind of funny……….

Never heard of two different sized motors used in a twin setup before. Bet it turned really well – at least in one direction.
