OK guys and gals, after storing the boat outside for years now and having no problems with critters a little red squirrel has decided to test my patience. Have cleaned two nests out of the boat. I don’t have the room to put the rig in the garage so that is not an option. I see the little bugger but can’t “take care” of him due to where I live.

Any suggestions. I have a live trap in the boat right now to corrale the little . Luckly every thing still checks out (wiring most importantly).

Live trap, baited with peanut butter. Long ride and done. BTW, can they swim?

Both above are great ideas, but Moth Balls work, If you can get thoughs little legs apart

Once trapped, they should be killed. You are not doing the animal any favors by releasing it. It will probably end up in another animal’s territory with no shelter or stored food. Not to mention it will likely become a nusense for someone else.

I’ll second that. Lay out some nuts and bird feed in area safe to shoot to. Then >>> Pop ’em!

    Thanks for the replies guys
Seriously moth balls in the boat are not stopping the guy. Been doing that for years. And the air rifle is not a option as the boat is between my house and the neighbors with new windows.

So live trap and the long ride are the option.

I know it’s not popular in these parts, but with the price of gas these days I would cook em up before I’d take him for a “long ride”. I eat them and they are actually quite tasty! Of course you have to get em first! Good Luck, sometimes they are smarter than we are!

How much meat do you get off a red squirrel? Better plan on shooting a mess of ’em

    1 cup all purpose flour.
    1 Tsp black pepper
    1 tsp onion powder
    1/2 tsp garlic powder

Parr-boil cut up squirrel for approximately 20 minutes. Roll pieces in dry mixture and fry large frypan in hot oil until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Pour some amonia on a rag and put it in there.. they will fly out of there. I got some out of our roof this way… just about knocked me off the ladder. They didnt come back.

Sorry, I missed the part about the squirrel being a RED Squirrel….I don’t eat them! I have no advise on those buggers, they drive me nuts!

BTW Rootski, shouldn’t you be working instead of playing around on the computer?

My neighbor had a similar problem. He actually set rat traps and caught them and ended his problem.

well cats can do a number on them… if the squirrel stays out late owls will too…. Ive not had lots of luck with hawks getting them.. the forest hawks are mostly birders…. and the prarie hawks mostly mousers…. though Ive seen a goshawk go after them (very unsuccessfully though.. in fact it was so pathetic it was funny)….
but live trapping DOES work pretty good.. I hear you should bait them with sunflower seeds…. really draws them in

After spending the weekend in my stand, I would join if someone where to start a war against squirrels. Especially red squirrels, the way they stare and make that noise that says “I can see you” to the entire world
I need a quiver full of cheep arrows with judo points.

    Here is my recipe:
    1 James Holst.
    1 .17 HMR w/3×9 scope.
1 box Fedral Balistic tips in 17 gr.
1 lawn chair with sightline to said boat.

Your problem should be vaporized in short order. The Ballistic tip Hornady round is meant to eliminate ricochets, and break up on contact.

    Works well on chipmonks too!

take it out and see if it can go swiming after you catch it. I think that will be a failure to swim for the squirrel.

Not sure if this will work, but a coworker of mine said his in laws used to buy cedar balls at Menards and put them in their motorhome. They never had a rodent problem. Not sure if they would drive the squirrel out or not but it might be worth a try. Alot less smelly than moth balls too.

Ask your neighbors IF you can shoot it from their house, NO need to worry about the new windows.

squirrels can swim. One winter when my husband and I were in LA and had gone out fishing. We let our mt curr out to run on this Island like always after the water had been high and fell. The dog got to treeing and wouldn’t come when we called. Told my husband to sart the motor and go slow around the Island and he’d come. Well he did, and I saw the dog coming on a run. Knew I was going to get spattered with mud so I ducked. Then I saw he had a live squirrel in his mouth. I grabbed an oar and tossed it out before the dog hardly got in the boat. My husband and dog looked at me like I had really done something bad. He said now why did you do that. If theat squirrel would have stayed in the boat I’d have been out with the gators swimming. Squirrels can get nasty.
So I recommend trapping and have a snack.

    Well the live trap worked!!!!

However, when I check the trap I found that this squirrel is on steroids!! That little rodent broke the door off to get out. At least a nice tuff of hair was left so I got a piece of it and hopefully it will think twice.

    Yeah right.

Repaired and reset the live trap and at lunchtime after voting – peanut butter on a mouse trap.

Should have took pictures. I couldn’t believe it.

I’ve enjoyed reading this post. I have been trapping squirrels in my back yard since 2001. After reading your post I looked out by my bird feeder and the trap was sprung. Squirrel number 67 for the year and number 298 since I started counting. Last winter was a mild winter and there are really a lot of squirrels right now. October is always the best month – this year I got 6 squirrels on Oct 1st and ended up with 17 for the month.
Don’t put your trap away – if that was a red squirrel you can expect there to be more than 1. I catch a lot more grey squirrels than reds but the reds are usually in pairs so you may want to keep your trap active for a while.

Can you catters use them for bait
I know of some mighty big bass in some small metro lakes that would hammer them

I agree with Comanchero15. Or you can leave the cover off for a few days. They don’t like that and will get discouraged. A couple of years ago I had the red squirrel problem in my boat 2 times I had to empty out the boat in 2 weeks each time I took out enough black walnuts out of boat to fill my 64 gallon garbage can twice.

The moth ball thing. Thats all I have to say about that.

I took the cover off for a couple of days and then put it back on and all was well. In the meantime they need to find another place to store there nuts and forgot about the boat.

But they got back at me with a vengance for taking there nuts away.

Here are the photo’s of my truck at the time after it sat there for 2 days.

No offense, but live traps are for PETA loving Pu**ies.

I have trapped a pile of them and they are better dead. Buy a Victor Rat Trap – bait with dog food moistened and formed around the trigger, or peanut butter. Dead on arrival.
