Stoopid MN question

Need to ask a few questions about use of a portable in Minnesota.

I know you are supposed to have a fish house license, even for a portable. What about if you don’t set it up? Even when I don’t use the tent, the big sled is about the best way to haul around my gear, and provides a good place to sit. Do I need to get a fish house license if I’m just sitting on the bench with the tent collapsed?

What about if I set up the ‘wind break’ part of the tent, but leave the rest open?

You guys need to amend the laws up there to make my life easier.

Gianni, you don’t have to have it licensed if you’re just sitting on it with the cover collapsed. You DO have to if you are utilizing it as a windbreak.

You guys need to grow some trees down there to make life easier. LOL!!!!

Thanks, bud. It surprises me a little that a windbreak needs a license, but then I suppose I could just bundle up & deal with it.

Trees are too hard to mow around

I don’t see why a fish house permit should be purchaced for anything that doesn’t spend the night on the ice without it’s owner.

But I too am stoopid in MN

    hey brian,

someone on here had a good point about that a while ago. you should think of a fish house as a boat. just like a boat, any fish house thats on the water needs a license. they explained it better but you get the point.

The reason they license boats and snowmobiles is because they are commonly stolen and the license provides a tracking system to help law enforcement. At least that’s the way it started – as a service to the public.

I don’t know if I could buy that a portable was stolen – if so, whoever owned it needs to find a closer place to take a leak.

I guess that’s my point. If you take it with you each day, there’s not much of a chance of it being stolen or some enforcement agent needing to contact you…unless you….have your tip ups too far way.
I think any fish house that is left on the ice unattended should have a lic. because of wind or being left out too long in spring and the clean up problems.

    I know…nothings allowed in MN!
