Seems like this should be important to some of you and was wondering, whats up?

I just heard about it from a friend at work here who fish’s for them and he was wondering what I had heard about it on this site?

Maybe I missed it but try to read everything.

    FIVE MILE POINT, LEECH LAKE
PROPOSED AQUATIC MANAGEMENT AREA (AMA) ACQUISITION
    Harlan Fierstine
    DNR Area Fisheries Supervisor
    07316 State 371 NW
    Walker, MN 56484
    218/547-1683
    [email protected]
The proposed Five Mile Point AMA consists of 1200 feet of shoreline and about 30 acres on Leech Lake east of Five Mile Point. Located offshore of the property is 1 of 6 documented muskellunge spawning areas on Leech Lake. The spawning area was located by Bob Strand (retired DNR Fisheries Research Biologist) during the radio telemetry work he conducted with muskellunge during the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. The spawning area is in water depths ranging from about 3 to 6 feet. The bottom substrate is primarily marl (very soft) on which grows Chara (muskgrass). Chara is the perfect substrate for the successful development of muskellunge eggs. All documented muskellunge spawning areas on Leech Lake have the combination of marl and Chara.
During January, 2002 this office received an Army Corps permit application for a 36 slip boat harbor to be dredged in a riparian wetland. The harbor would serve future development on the 30 acres. Due to likely damage caused by concentrated boat traffic to the muskellunge spawning area located directly offshore, the DNR recommended denial of the permit application. There is no guarantee that the permit will be denied. Concentrated boat traffic would likely destroy much of Chara thus eliminating the substrate needed for the successful development of muskellunge eggs.
Because of the muskellunge spawning area the DNR Division of Fisheries has allocated $200,000 of LCMR funds to purchase the property to be managed as an AMA. Such a designation would protect the muskellunge spawning area for the future. The value of the property is greater than the amount of money the DNR has available. Presently several chapters of Muskie Inc, the Wabedo-Little Boy-Inguadona-Rice-Cooper Lakes Assoc., and Leech Lake Watershed Foundation have committed funds to help purchase the proposed AMA. All these dollar commitments will be matched by Reinvest In Minnesota (RIM) funds. More funds are needed for the purchase.
The property owner is interested in seeing the property purchased and managed as an AMA. Thus he is willing to hold off for a short unspecified time on any development plans to allow some time for funds to be raised for the purchase. He has enjoyed the natural resources of the Leech Lake area for years. Like anyone with an investment he does want to see a return for himself and his children.
The proposed Five Mile Point AMA is important for the future of the high quality muskellunge fishery of Leech Lake.

Has anyone contacted Wildlife Forever to see if they can jump in on this? They’ve been instrumental in such efforts in WI in recent years.

Steve, that’s excellent coverage of what’s going on so far! A BIG THANKS for letting us in on it!

I have an E-mail in to Wildlife Forever. I hope that as a Life Member they will respond quickly and let me know they are active on the issue, or request more info to become active.

I am doing what I can, including buying tickets and donating direct cash to the project. Leech is where I started and where my heart is. I have moved on to other waters, but always like to go back to my roots. We have the problem in Walker Bay, with the Weed Bed getting destroyed by one project, we can’t lose this one.

Looking at the list of contributors, we have some guns on board. Let’s all do what we can.

I have watched so many lakes get over developed and ruined, Someone needs to step-up and realize the resource that is drawing all of the people, will be destroyed by the people.

    I am spreading the word.

The following note was a response from Wildlife Forever. Sounds like Cass County is not the right place to have a lake like this. But it would easier to change the officials than move the lake.

    <<<Thanks for writing.

We are not aware of the development problems on Leech as no one has brought them to our attention. We are aware of a similar issue on Woman Lake and are considering what Wildlife Forever might do there to help.

Presumably there is a group involved in trying to raise money to buy the developer out. You might consider making a grant application (You can get a copy on our web site). You can also consider the possibility of working to require and environmental impact statement. Many times the cost and time for such a thing will discourage the developer.

You should also know that the Cass County public officials are pro-development and care little for the impact that development has. Best thing we can do is to elect better officials. (This is my personal opinion. I have a place on Woman Lake and the County just yesterday rubber stamped the developers plan for high density buildings).>>>

Doesn’t sound good — I will request the grant form and fill it out. Otherwise it looks like Muskies, Inc./RIM/and the People will need to take charge of this one.

This is not only important to Leech lake, but to all of the lakes that are stocked with Leech Lake strain muskies. Your five dollar donation can win you prizes that may be worth a hundred times that amount. If you are coming to the Muskie Expo next weekend, they can be purchased there as well.

I bought two tickets, I wish I could buy more cuz those are some really cool prizes and trips, but I dont have that much money to spare this time of year. I will probably end up buying a couple more at the Expo on Saturday, that is if I dont spend all my $$ at the various booths. I hope we are able to do something about these issues, I hope we can get enough money together, even though I havent fished Leech much I know that the Leech lake strain esox is very important to keep healthy. See ya at the Expo. C’mon guys its only 5 bucks!!! buy a couple. I dont even have to win anything to have a good feeling about this one, give some back to the muskies that have made us all crazies!!
