As you all may or may not know, I am nuts about sunrises and sunsets. I am however partial to Mille Lacs sunsets. Now with the place on the east side of the lake (Thanks Bobber! )I will be able to share more and more with you all. I am no Rivereyes, but I will give it a shot.
This series was from Last Wednesday before we hit the lake with Greg Kay from Apple Valley, and Chris Miller of New Hampshire.

October in my opinion is the best month for sunrises and sunsets because of the sirrus (SP?) clouds which really provide some beautiful colors.

God, I wish I could paint like Terry Redlin! I know what I would be doing for a living.

If you did not know that was Mille Lacs and 35 degrees, you could make an argument that it was a tropical beach in Mexico or Florida!

    Thanks guys!

well… I didnt start out shooting like rivereyes either! lol… in fact my early sunset shots were disaster… my house sits above a lake that the sun sets over… I see it EVERY day… though I have too many trees in the way for a good shot…. but I tried all the time anyway….. for about a year I tried to come up with something good that way… just couldnt do it!….
anyway….. you got a great spot to work with there.. and a LOT of sunsets to try it on….. your doing good so far…. for some added fun.. find things to put in the foreground of your shot… you can silhouette someone fishing or something with the sunset in the bg… put the sun in a 1/3 line.. either left or right(vertical) on the photo… then try and get the horizon on another 1/3 (horizontal) line… this is known as the “rule of thirds and will help you get some interesting compositions…. though of course one should NEVER follow rules at all times!… the art is knowing when NOT to….
anyway.. these are great.. keep up the good work…

Excellent work.. way better than my early stuff…

seeee.. now I can see you got the idea!… shall we talk merges?… (there are just SOOO many things to look out for!)… Im SURE when you took the shot of the boat you didnt have much choice.. it was where it was afterall.. and all too often thats how it goes…. but if you DO get a choice…. just drop the composition down so the boat is all surrounded by water.. the closer you can bring it to the foreground the better!…. but as I know all too well… you just get to do the best you can.. and choice is all to often taken from you…. I like the ice shots too… if you can seperate the people and the trucks into independant subjects its even better.. otherwise they tend to merge together… its completly nuts just how much care a high level pro takes with their composition… beleave me… though Im preaching.. all to often Im standing with the congregation going halleuah….. instead of doing what Im tell ya to do…. its for sure easier said than done… just thought Id pass on some tips…. if you can use them someday it just might give you a shot that makes ya famous!….

but these are good shots… as you know.. even better than the others because they have an interesting foreground going for them…..

hope ya dont mind the advice… your current shots are great…..

Great one Chris! We had an awesome one tonight over here on the Fox River/ De Pere. And to top it off we were catching some really pretty 3-6# walleyes. Unfortunately……………………………. the camera was accidentally left at home, so no sunset shots…..would have been PERFECT holding those fish up with that red sunset in the background!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ken, if I can get some shots that are anything CLOSE to what you post, I would be thrilled. I do have one without the boat as well. I like shots like that. I want to get some deer hunting this year like that with my boys…
I have one in particular in my mind. If I can get it to work, I will be very happy!
Planning a sunset, now there is a new one!
    Thanks for the tips!
