Glad to be here. Thanks for the welcomes.
Lets get right to it. The crappie bite is on at Whiteface Reservoir in St. Louis County. I am heading back up there this weekend for them slabs. The run and gun method seemed to be the ticket if you dont mind drillin through that much ice. We also got a couple eyes the last day of the season, but the crappies were much bigger. Red glow & fathead under bobber. I cant wait for open water already, did more ice fishing this winter than ever before and I am ready for it to go away.
I am interestes in hearing how you guys that fish the Vermillion area will approach walleye opener. It looks like the water will be low and cold for us. Any suggestions for bog stained reservoir water?? I dont think I will get to V on opener but more than likely I will be on Whiteface. I havent fished these types of lakes on opener before, what should I expect?? thanks

Nice photo. I haven’t thought about Whiteface res. in some time. It was one of the first places my family went camping to when we moved to Duluth years ago. We tried a little fishing from shore as we didn’t have a boat. If my memory serves me right the mosquitoes ate us up and mom was packing befor breakfast was done. We learned from that lesson though. There’s a couple of small lakes on the way up there that you could try. Look up Murphy on the DNR site. It used to have great crappies and gills. Elliot is another of my favorites with giant gills. Welcome to the site and let us know how you do. Steve

Nice picture and thanks for sharing! Those are some nice crappies and I bet the scenery is worth every penny there too!
As far as Vermilion on the opener…regardless of water level or temps-Vermilion is consistantly a GREAT opening lake. One thing that we have found is that we catch much more fish right after the opener. I dont know if it is the lack of boats for 5 months, then a ton hitting the water at once. Either way, the lake heats up so fast and the fish typically spawn early. I usually get numbers on rainbows or leeches w/ lindys and a plain red hook in 6-15′ of water. The bigger fish come on slip bobbers on points of just dock fishing at night. Focus on points and narrows and if there is shallow bays nearby, those areas seem to hold more fish as well. I have fished Vermilion for 20 years now, including most openers. I know that the guides from the Vermilion forum below have some great info too.
Welcome to the site, We are gald to have you aboard!!
Keep sending those pictures and I look forward to chating with you.
Hi Guys,
Vermilion is a fantastic early season destination for walleye. The dark water bays and the midlake gravel bars, attract uncountable numbers of good eating size walleyes.
Pike bay gets alot of attention opening day, but there are any number of good locations to fish, where you may be the only boat around.
slip bobbers, fished over points and the shoreline breaks in the evening, is a stone killer!
