Last night I noticed my dog having problems climbing stairs. She’s a 2 1/2 year old lab/golden retriever mix. When she woke up this morining she was obviously in pain and refused to climb the stairs. Now that she’s up for a while she’s getting around better, but when I put pressure on her hips, she yelps a little. Do you guys think this is caused by a sprain or pulled muscle, or am i looking at bigger problems? If shes not better by monday I’ll bring her to the vet, but I hate to see my dog in pain . Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

It wouldn’t be rare for her to have run into something and bruised or pulled something. That does happen. I would give it a week and see if she improves. If not, then its time to consider a vet check.

I really don’t want to play vet and say that it is hip displasia, but that is what it sounds like. I had the same mix breed and the same symptoms, and the vet had said thats what it was. I would definetly ask a vet.

I have heard that there are dog foods out there that can really help hip displasia. My dog would only have pain on average, a 2-3 days over a period of 4-5 months. So its definitely not crippling. Just go see a good vet and they should give you a reasonable way to treat it.

I wouldn’t go as far as calling it hip dysplasia. If this came on all at once, probably a pulled muscle, or tweaked a ligament. It can happen without warning! My dogs will tweak something on a regular basis. Like Matt said, give it a week and see how the dog does, more than likely she tweaked something. Keep her on the low down the next few days, don’t let her run and jump around and cause more damage. If the dog is in pain, give her half of a BUFFERED aspirin. Good luck and keep us informed.

Labs can be prone to hip problems. If it were my dog, I’d at least give my vet a call and ask.

MAybe read yesterdays post “HEads up dog owners” Might be that also… Hopefully just a sprained leg! Good Luck!
