    Wind-

    My favorite place to fish.

Wind get the food chain in motion. As Dick Pearson says it creates “Chaos”….

I use the wind in many different ways but last year came across a interesting pattern. If the wind blows for a few days in one direction… I have had VERY good luck targeting that wind blown side of the lake the DAY AFTER the wind has changed. Give it a try this year!

A few links to learn more about the wind…(Thanks to my friends at Esox Research Corporation for helping me find these)

    Steve:

As much as I hate fighting the wind with the trolling motor. I do now that I tried it much more last summer and managed to come in contact with more fish than previous summers.

That’s a whale of a tip there Steve! I’ll certainly give it a try and see what happens. Do you suppose it’s because all of the stuff that has blown in has a chance to “settle”?

    SAK,

Actually I read some articles long ago in IN-Fish that stated that even though the wind is gone the CURRENT remains.

I will most likely start another thread on current in the near future that will detail this much better.

Most people like the wind from the southwest and west but any wind is better than none at all. I have found that wind from the east, or southeast is also very productive. This is normally a good indication that a change is on it’s way, and that can be a great time to be on the water.

    Hi Steve,

Now that you live so close, we’ll have to get out on the Big V next summer. I’m looking forward to throwing those new baits of yours.

Anyone noticed general color preferences that seem to work when its windy? It seems to me like white, pearl, and similar colors are more effective than usual with strong wind present. Anyone else?

    Hey Fluke,

I can’t say that I have noticed that pattern in my fishing, but if it gives you confidence then it works. Different lakes will have different color preferences because of a number of factors. Things like water color, what is the main forage, or even, how much fishing pressure it gets, can have a major influence on color presentations.

Myself, I am partial to “Hot” baits when I am on Vermilion muskie fishing. You know, the hot pinks and chartruse or Flo/green or Orange. At the same time, there is another guide that does very well throwing almost nothing but natural colors. Your confindence in what you are throwing, is what will make you successful. IMHO
