Deep Structure / Open Water-Let’s “Fish The Lake”

One of the areas that doesn’t receive alot of pressure in Musky fishing is open water. I have had some very good luck fishing over the TOP of water 20+ feet deep. In fact the picture by my name is of a fish that was caught in Approx. 23′ of water on a top water lure.

Have any of you had an experience with other species that will suspend this high in this water column?

Also I have had luck again fishing over the top whenever I can find a “Cloud” of baitfish in the top 1/2 of the water column.

Wierd that this should come up right now. Bill Dance was saying on yesterday’s show that predator fish will cruise just beneath the surface on calm, glassy days and use the surface as a mirror to see baitfish below them.

Do you suppose this is what the muskys are doing?

    Hi Steve,

When fishing deep structure for muskies, I always start working my baits well off the structure.

Muskies will very often suspend adjacent to these areas between feedings. Even when they are in a neutral mode, they can often be enticed to strike if given the correct presentation.

It makes since to me even though I’m just going to really start targeting them more this year. I’ve been out early mornings and have caught crappies within a foot of the suface in over 20 plus feet of water. The crappies were eating some type of bugs on the surface so if their there it makes sense that something that would eat them (Muskys) would be just below them. I personally have not targeted deep water yet, but I will experiment this summer.

Although, I do have a friend who was watching his graph and found a cloud of bait fish in 70 feet of water. He stopped and on his first few casts nailed a mid-to upper 40″ ski.

Goes to show they are where the food is.

    Open water?
I spend most of my summer fishing “no mans” land. This is where the biggest eyes roam in one of the bodies of water that I fish. Sometimes as shallow as 5-10 foot down over 30-70ft of water.

My brother is a musky nut, and he fishes a cisco infested musky lake and throws cranks over deep, deep water and hits fish from time to time in the late summer overcast days. I have been with him a couple times and have seen it happen more than once when I have been there. What a rush, seeing these “logs” come out of deep water at the crank right beside the boat and scare the “be-jesus” out of you!

    Fun stuff.

I’ve seen this on walleyes quite often, especially on a calm day after it has blown hard a couple days. Spinners with no weight in 40′ is fun!

I’ve also seen bass hold over deep water. The best has been clear lakes with lots of shad for bait. Bass on top in 70′.

Lake Pepin mid – late summer out over 15′ – 25’+ pulling cranks for walleyes. Usually the last couple hours of the day is best. #5 and #7 shad raps set 5′ behind the boards. When the shad skip out in front of the board as it passes…. hold on. That “bobber’s” about to get bit!!
