When you look up the positive and negative factors they used to determine this, it comes down to dollars spent in about half of the catagories. Doesn’t make sense that smart people equal more dollars.

    Just my $.02

Looking at the factors for this rating, I wouldn’t put too much stock into this.
These are some of the things used to determine the intelligence of the children.

Public elementary and secondary school revenue per $100 personal income.
Average teacher salary as a percent of average pay of all workers.
    Special education pupil-teacher ratio.
Percent of public elementary and secondary school staff who are district administrators.
average size of class in public schools.

In fact the only proficiency test they factored in are in reading, writing, and math and even then they only factored the fourth and eighth grade classes. The study did not even take into account the children that go to private schools.
All this seems to say is if we put more money into the schools the children will be smarter. That is a leap in my opinion.
    My two cents.

geez, lighten up fellas. I heard about it on Bob and Tom show yesterday, thought I’d share. Thought it was funny that Vermont was #1 and Arizona #50 two years in a row.

Maybe the reason that Vermont is staying on top is because they dont have room for 136,000 more immigrants to live there to flood the school systems to drop down the *average* for intellegence.

Its not that the immigrants are stupid, but if you cant speak or write english, your test scores arent going to be very good here. Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis students can speak a combined 80 languages.. I wonder how many of those 80 nationalities can speak fluent enough english? I know their parents working at the Bloomington Wal Mart cant speak any.

The Twin cities is one of the highest rated places to move to by a lot of sources.. this attracts people to the cities, but it also attracts people from overseas.

This little survey is done by Morgan Quitno Press, a private research and publishing company in Kansas.

Morgan Quitno specializes in reference books that compare states and cities in several different subject areas. The corporation is not a subsidiary of any other company nor is it subsidized by any outside interest group. Its books are found in reference libraries throughout the United States.
In other words its misleading to say it was a survey, when all they did was take data from one book, make up their own computation, then *walah*! we have the United States in order.
I’m not saying they are or are not a genuine publisher, as I’m sure they’ve cited their sources. However its important to remember that this little “Survey” was conducted by a private unaccredited company. I guess my main point is, Morgan Quitno is not a State or federally recognized outfit.

I think I’d put more trust in the education rankings of the states. They use several factors in determining which states have the best education systems. They use graduation rates, ACT test score averages, etc… Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin are almost always the top 3 states on the list. The 3 states have all been #1 on several occasions.

I am well aware MN, WI and yes, even Iowa have very high graduation rates as well as ACT/SAT scores etc….I posted this cause I thought it was humorous.

Well said Dave. It may have seemed brutal, but seems logical to me!
Oh and your Wal-Mart comment…let me just say.. Anyone who’s ever been there has got to see the humor in that!
