Could one of you guys help me out? Me and 2 buddies are coming to Red Wing to fish with Mr. Holst this saturday, Oct 21st. We will be arriving in Red Wing (and meeting at Evert’s) early that same morning from IA. We will only be fishing one day. Where can you get a one day out of state license at say 6:00AM on Sat??? I already tried buying them online from the MN website, but it is currently down. I called the 800# but the lady said that you have to have a copy of the license with you and an authorization # alone is not valid. Thanks in advance. BTW looks like we might hit the walleye/sauger bite good this trip. Thanks.

This will only kind-of answer your question.

Since you are non-residents of MN or WI, you can hold either a MN non-resident license or a WI non-resident license to fish the Pool 4 border water. So, one option would be to get a short-term non-resident WI license. Those are available on-line, you can print them from home before you leave.

Don’t know why the MN on-line licensing is down…has been for several weeks now.

The lady on the phone is wrong. The auth number is all you need.

Jason, thanks for the reply. But, if I am not mistaken, you have to buy at least a 4 day Non resident lic in WI and it is $24. I think a one day non resident lic in MN is $9.50. My math isn’t that good but 14.50 x 3guys equals more beers for after the fishing is over for the day.

I never claimed this to be a cheaper option, just an option that would put a license in your pocket so you don’t keep James waiting on Saturday morning.

The on-line DNR site has been down all summer. They have not figured out how to secure the site. There was a security hole open to potential hackers. Anyway, if you want to verify with the DNR, call the main office info line at 888-646-6367.

Just about every Holiday store in MN sells the licenses. Gotta stop for a rest room/breakfast somewhere along the way.

Sometimes I just gotta shake my head wonder if the left hand knows what the right hand is doing over at the DNR. I’m pretty sure they just hired an outside call service to handle that function. The “Lady on the phone” probably has no association with the DNR or any other state function.

As someone said.. any ELS licensing place can sell the licenses. $9.50/day, most holiday stations have the machines. Be prepared for it to take a few minutes, they will have to type in all your information… adress, name, state, social security number.

One comment about the Holiday stores, I went to one with my brother-in-law to buy a one-day lisense, but the guy behind the counter didn’t know how to use the machine. Fortunately, there was someone else around who he was able to get to come out and sell a lisense.
