My cleaning lady told me her 61 year old father was ticketed by the DNR for giving a person a ride on the ice on lake Washington…. aboard his 4X4 ATV…. this is not legal? Snowmobile too, no two people? Anyone know?
    Strange brew….

    Its news to me.
The only thing I remind friends of is to make sure there registered. Farmers you know, generally don’t because its not necessary on private property.
Never heard of anyone I know getting pinched for it and we do it all the time.

Different snowmobiles are designed for 1 or 2 riders. On most, it is unlawful to have 2 riders per sled.

I assume that all ATVs are designed for one rider. I have never seen a ATV designed for doubling up. I did not know that there was a law against 2 on an ATV.

Either way, unless they were driving wrecklessly-it sounds like a good case for a warning instead of a ticket. Maybe they are behind on their budgets since they arent ticketing sledders left and right for speeding this year!

I just called the MN D&R… the person in the “front” must be under 16 years old and the driver, who must be in back, must be an adult… to be legal.

Heard on the news last night that several of the southern Minnesota counties Sheriff Departments have banned all motorized vehicles on the lakes due to the warm weather. It’s possible he may have been cited for that??

Food for thought – Legal or otherwise, all the manufacturers insist that ALL ATV’s are being properly ridden/driven only if there are NO PASSENGERS.

Now, before this turns into anything in the form of a soapbox, I personally believe that with proper caution it’s perfectly safe to let someone ride along. Especially small children, positioned in front of an adult driver.

I didn’t hit the link because I’m short on time but I wonder if speed had anything to do with the citation or coming within 100′ of any shelter exceeding 10mph?

I can dig it… but like most people… I had no clue that this was a law in MN.

You can have extra people either in a sled or on a trailer as long as it has a rigid hitch, no rope. That’s one reason I use my Otter with the hitch.

You can pull it with a rope, but if a person is in it, it must have a rigid hitch as well.

If it’s made for one person that’s all you can have on it.
I have heard that a company is now making an ATV for 2 but don’t remember who it was that was making it.
I was thinking of buying one of those 6 wheelers some day.
    Keep it safe

    Chappy,

Is that a 6 wheeler as in “an off-road golf cart” or the 6 wheel tub you steer with dual brake levers?

That’s the one that you run through swamps or whatever.
They’re not as fast as a ATV but they are very stable.
    Those things even float.
Might be great for hunting and work around my lake front.

I’ve heard reports that say those “tubs” are practically unstoppable. The ONLY thing I’ve heard that can “take ’em down” is getting high centered in bog. Too soft to support the wheels but firm enough to hold the belly. Other than that, I think it’ll handle almost anything in the horizontal plane! I’ve contemplated this purchase as well but I don’t think I’d actually use it often enough to make it worth it. Maybe someday though!

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a 6-wheeler in use. How does it do going from open water onto ice? Does it have any trouble getting there?

I’m told can go from open water back unto ice with studded tires. Without the studs or even with tracks it is supposed to be pretty tough.
The problem with those things from what I understand is the amount of maintenance and upkeep.
I have gotten to ride in one on a couple of occasions both in winter and in summer. It was unstopable.

I have a friend that owns the Polaris 6 wheeler. I have been on it many times. Your right, they are pretty much unstopable. As far as going from over open water to ice, I would have to see it to believe it.

I have to second the thoughts on the difficulty of ice/water. With proper studding, I’ve seen some amazing things done so I don’t question so much the ability to see it done but what would be required for studs to do it up right! In all honesty, I think a properly studded track would perform better than properly studded wheels, but only in this application.

I think I’ll just keep the 3wheeler tuned up, wait for solid ice, and hope Mr. Spock Is still working on my
    “teleporter”.
