I gut hooked a northern today on a tip-up, I was using a small treble on my tip-up, am I better off using a large, or small hook to prevent fish swallowing the hook? Even if it means missing more hooksets, I’d rather not gut hook anymore fish.

    thanks

I’ve had my best luck eiether using a quick strike rig with 2 trebles and a spinner so you don’t have to let them run at all, or else I use a 2/0 or bigger shiner hook by Gamakatsu. With the shiner hook I still don’t let them run much and seem to get consistant hook sets in the corner of the mouth.

I agree with Mike. Quick set rigs are the best solution for northern and musky fishing.
