Thinking of getting the prodigy/xmlti rod reel from cabelas for jigging for walleyes. Is this a decent set up or any suggestions?

A buddy of mine has this combo! It is nice, light, sensitive. Very comparable to an Avid or Loomis GL2.

I’ve had 2 bad reels that were OEM Cabela’s. Rods are fine but the reels I had to send back.

The Prodigy line is the top-of-the-line when it comes to reels for Cabela’s. If you’re going to go with a Cabela’s reel, that’s the series to get.

I have an XMLti, and I love that thing. You can take the guides and bend them all the way down to the rod, and they just spring right back. They sound cheap while jigging, because you’ll hear the guides move, but they’re anything but. I haven’t caught as many fish on it as I would have liked this summer (of course!), but it handled everything I threw at it with no problems at all. Great rod, very sensitive.

I have seen to many low time Cabelas reels that are junk to ever consider buying one myself. It is truly amazing how fast they turn into junk sometimes.

Stick with Abu, Shimano, Pflueger, etc.

I forgot to mention that: if you don’t go with the Cabela’s reel, Shimano makes an EXCELLENT reel that does take abuse. I know why you’re looking at the combo though-the price makes it very attractive.

I work at cabelas in the fishing department and we offer many other reel choices with that combo for around the same price if you change your mind on that prodigy.
