Fence installation

What can a guy expect to pay to have a yard fence installed?

I have ~ 150 linear ft of fence that I need to put in this fall to enclose my backyard. I’m not sure that I have the time to do it before the snow flies, as we are devoting a lot of time and energy to getting a bedroom ready for the birth of our second child. Plus there’s that pesky fall walleye bonanza that soaks up all sorts of time.

I’m leaning towards a wood fence (cedar) but might think about a PVC fence too.

Anybody do this sort of thing, even if it’s just on the side? What can I expect to pay if I have someone put the fence in for me?

    Thanks!

GO with chainlink. About $7-10 per LF installed.

I have to agree with Derek. You are talking 25-30 dollars per LF for cedar and double that for PVC. You might have to cut back on buying fishing tackle for awhile.

Jason, I had a 6 foot cedar fence installed with one double gate and a single 3 foot gate last December and it cost $2,100 for approximately 150 feet or $14 per foot. Menards or Home Depot will price out materials if you tell them what you want and then you can compare what it costs just to hire a fencing contractor. Make sure you call for an underground utility locate before you dig if you’re doing it yourself. I speak from experience! I was digging an LP line in my yard one time and I got to this black root I couldn’t get through with the shovel. So what’d I do? I got an axe and chopped a 6 inch section out of my phone line. Good luck, Tut

Install what fits your budget and needs.

If a privacy fence is needed, then install it. However, if not, your neighbors might think you’re being reclusive.

A chain link is much more economical and holds a longer lifespan, with less maintenance. However to some, the appearance is not attractive.

A cedar fence (privacy) holds a higher value and is considered “more attractive”, thus raising property value to a “very slight degree”. However you are blocking out your neighbors and generally “shrink” your yard.

If you are looking at holding the kids “at bay” and if the pocket book allows, I would go “white picket” style/height if it fits the yard, or something similar to that type of appearance. It is not “reclusive” and it holds the highest value for your property. It is also considered the most “attractive”.

All truely depends on your needs and again, the budget. If you are concerned about “critters” getting in, then chain link or 6′ Cedar is the way to go.

One thing some folks due when installing a chain link fence for economy reasons, is add hedging around the yard. This can really add color and character to your landscape!

We need to contain one kid and one dog. My daughter has reached the point where I would like her to be able to run around outside without having to keep within one arms lengthof her. Don’t want to go privacy because our yard is pretty secluded as it is, I just need to be able to boot the dog out and let the kid run free with some degree of both freedom and security.

For do it yourself chain link you can rent pretty much everything you will need. Post hole digger, electric cement mixer, come along, and fence puller. 150 LF of chain link with suppiles ran me about $600-700.

make sure you check with city/township ordinances to ensure you do / do not need a permit!

Already checked…no permit needed, just have to abide by some design guidelines regarding fence height and setbacks from lot lines.

Usually no permit if under 6 feet. Set the fence line 6 inches BEHIND your property line. Or have it surveryed, that but cost $$ to do..

I can’t believe how much it costs to have a residential lot surveyed.

So, I have my markers set well inside of anything that is close to the lot line.

Your picking a good time if your going to do it yourself. I had to dig about 32 holes in the middle of July and it was so humid and hot, the cement would not cure.. Get the post hole digger..

I talked to two surveyors…$800-$900 just to have the lot marked, more if I wanted legally-binding drawings made.

If I were to do this myself, which I probably will, I would rent the power auger and get them all dug in a flash.

When you purchased your house, there should have been a plat drawing enclosed by the title company. IF NOT, go to your title company and demand copy.

This will basically assist you in getting you where you need to be.

Yes, but your title company does the foot work to “dig it out”. You paid your title company to get this for you, you should use them to get it in your hands!

Let them do the foot work!

So do I, but the girl has her license now, and It’s more than a fence will control. GOOD LUCK

Remember to call Gopher State One call before you dig. Any and all utilities will be marked, and you are not liable, or fried

The number I use is 800-252-1166.

And if you have any non-utility lines, you can find a contractor that will mark those lines for about $50

I just got done helping put in a fence, we used an Ice auger 8″ to drill out all corner posts and just used a fence pounder to drive the others ones into the ground. then we ran our string lines off the corners or the cemented ones and then we had our spot to put them in. we then went around and and put up the top rail and used a cable come along and a small linked chain and stretched the fence with that.
