    Here is the ARM logo.

    http://www.fishthelake.com/ubbthreads/files/4620-arm_logo-2_1%20copy.jpg

I think it “speaks” to all who see it…. maybe not picture perfect, but a fine start at a logo.

ARM – Anglers as Role Models ia a non-profit (501) (C) (3) Foundation that has been created to serve BB/BS (Big Brothers and Big Sisters) by holding “events” such as the EFN – BB/BS Gathering (the one EFN held the day before our FTR Get-Together at Evert’s last time). ARM will be hosting these events in the future for all agencies in MN… and in 2003, will include BB/BS agencies in WI.

The goal is to take BB/BS kids fishing for the day and provide fishing role models. Some of these lkids will never see the inside of a boat, much less be subjected to pro-fishermen. A fishing day with an ARM role model can change these kids lives forever…. by providing them a hands-on view of fishing as a fun activity, a hobby, a competivitave sport, and possible future career. It is the goal and intent of ARM to add a new state annually to the program.

I have to say that I am blown away by the generosity of those EFN Pro-Staff tournament fishermen in making a pledge of portions from their tournament winnings to ARM.

I have coined a phrase for this act as …. “a tournament pledge”. James and I have discussed this…. and have both realized that not only should you guys who are doing this, be recognized for your great heart and spirit (for making the pledge to ARM), but you should be seen on the ARM website (will come soon ) and be recognized there for this pledge.

Having you seen and “recognized” with appreciation will help publicize ARM and promote other tournament pros to follow suit.

As a special thank you, I am having one of my silver Bait Rigs / Walleye Willospoon lures engraved to say….

    ARM

    Anglers as Role Models

I will send this silver one to all who make this pledge.

When you win your tournaments… I will have a gold-plated version engraved to award to you on stage.

    It will say..

    ARM

    Anglers as Role Models

    Tournament Contributor

A star engraved on the Willospoon will symbolize each tournament win you make for the year and your contribution to ARM.

This I do as a token of my appreciation. Thanks from the bottom of my heart (and from all who are ARM) for you support and pledges.

Those wishing to support arm may donate money and receive a tax deducion. A $50.00 donation to ARM will get you an ARM hat, and a sticker. Amounts for donations are tax deductible and greatly appreciated. For your donation, you will receive the following items….

$50.00 donation – ARM hat and an ARM “sticker”

$75.00 donation – two ARM hats and an ARM “sticker”

$100.00 donation – ARM hat and an ARM pro-shirt, ARM “sticker”.

$500.00 donation – ARM Pro-Guide rainsuit, ARM hat and an ARM shirt, ARM “sticker”.

$1,000.00 donation – ARM Pro-Guide rainsuit, ARM hat and ARM shirt, ARM “sticker”, and a day guided trip on the Mississippi River with ARM founders, James Holst or Dustin Stewart.

    This will get balls rolling!

Send you donations with your return address & phone number (shirt size, name you want on the clothing, etc…) to:

I am soon going to be approaching sponsors for tournament fishing next year. I am going to be looking for donations for the cost of tournaments, and expenses. I am going to donate half of any tournament winnings to ARM. In doing so, I hope to encourage other anglers to do so. I hope this will bring some extra visibility to ARM. I am going to do a spread in the local paper regarding this. Question, and maybe you can help, if a company donates money to the cause, how much of it would be tax deductible for them? Just a percentage of what we are able to donate to ARM? Or, is it even possible at all?

I am a member and one of the founders of ARM.
ARM stands for Anglers as Role Models. As a Pro-Fisherman, I have a compassion to represent sport fishing and good sportsmanship as an activity and lifestyle to today’s youth. Teaching kids about fishing has been very important to me for many years. I devote much time to it on an annual basis. I have held 12 annual free kids fishing tournaments on Mn. Take-a-Kid Fishing Weekend. Once a year, I teach “fishing classes” for the Owatonna High School. I do this on the water at Owatonna’s Lake Kohlmier. Bus loads of kids arrive for fishing instruction. I share all I can with them while they stand on the dock. I tie to the dock and give instruction while standing in my boat. This gives me a chance to show all the gadgets and tools I use while fishing and explain how I use many lures by making casts and presentations on the water. I allow time for question & answer and have the kids interact by telling of their own fish catching experiences. I also go into classrooms for the fourth and fifth grades at Owatonna elementary schools to share fishing information with younger kids.
One of the reasons I do events like this is that I make and sell fishing tackle. It is my livelihood and one source of my income. To insure a fishing future, I am seriously active in promoting the fishing industry to all youth. I do have many concerns for the future of the fishing industry and the growth of fishing as a activity for today’s youth. I feel that so many kids will miss out on fishing as an individual activity, family activity, and recreational sport due to the decline of “the family as a unit” in today’s culture. Statistics in some communities have shown that one of three kids are born into single parent homes, without a father in the family. Many of these children will not have the chance to experience fishing in their lifetime. other statistics show that if a child does not fish by age 18 that he, or she, will never become fishermen. Another concern is the era in which kids live today that consumes their lives with time spent in front of a screen using electronic games. More and more in general, kids today spend time indoors “playing” instead of being involved in outdoor activities.
My goal with ARM is to teach kids that fishing is something fun to do. It can be done alone, with a friend or family member, or in groups. Fishing is inexpensive, can be done year round, and is an activity that can bring you closer to nature. Fishing can build help self esteem, confidence, provide goals, and competition. It begins a collection process of lures and tackle. Most importantly, it keeps kids off the street corners!
I hope to continue to provide my fishing knowledge (with 45 years of fishing experience), my regard toward good sportsmanship, and great desire to provide myself as a role model to today’s youth. I will do this by promoting ARM through the Electronic Fishing Network. ARM will be producing the future “EFN / Big Brothers & Big Sisters Gatherings” and will work to include all BB/BS agencies in Minnesota and Wisconsin next year. It is the goal of ARM to expand this event to benefit BB/BS on a national basis.

    Kudos
I couldn’t agree more with your statements on the value of getting kids involved in an activity that is rewarding and fun instead of leaving them with too much time and opportunity to get into trouble. I have worked with a group that focuses on getting inner city kids and single parent kids out on the water and out on the ice. We stirve to “Teach a kid to fish ethically, Teach a kid to live biblically”.

Several of us have hoped for about 3 years to see this type of activity from the “Pro’s”. Great Job Hawger in getting this started!!!

    BTW Hawger, you’ve got mail.

Thanks Don and Fireflick, for your Tournament Pledges and kindness.

All donations should be in the form of a pledge for now, as ARM has yet to be granted acceptance for the 501-C-3 status… and untill we get the letter back from the IRS… it is my understanding, that all donations should be on “hold”… or in the form of a pledge. Doing the IRS paper-work is a process that ARM is presently in the process of. Once accepted, ARM will be able to “roll”. Hawger

Owatonna, Oct 26th – the Ladies Aluxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars arranged and held the first Owatonna Awareness Fair as its “Make a Difference Day Community Service Project”. The event ran from 9:00am to 11:30am at the VFW parking lot and club rooms.

The purpose of the fair was to educate children and families in the safety elements available in the Owatonna community, and to help them feel more at ease when confronted with tragedy, problems, and concerns in our lives.

Participating in the service project were Gold Cross Ambulance, American Red Cross, Owatonna Fire Department, Steele County Snow Blazers, Steele Wacea Co-Op Electric, Owatonna Gun Club, Steele County Marine and Recreation, Steele County Sheriff’s Dept. and Posse, Owatonna Police Department, Owatonna Park and Recreation, Owatonna Utilities, Rice Lake Park Ranger, Cabela’s Retail, Owatonna Clinic, Steele County Safety Council, Steele County Water Patrol, and ARM – Anglers as Role Models.

EFN Asst. Pro-Staff Director and fellow ARM member, Richard Smith, and I shared boating safety tips with many folks… as they looked at the Richard’s Steele County Water Patrol boat.

Richard and I enjoyed sharing information about ARM – Anglers as Role Models, with many people who helped sponsor the event and attended the event. It was fun to be representing ARM for the “first time out”.

Thanks “Smitty” for the good company and fine job in helping to sponsor this event.

I am posting the email I just got from Troy Fritz… Hawger

    Dave,

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation that you and EFN have put forward to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. It is truly commendable that a group of outdoor and fishing enthusiasts have taken time out of their busy lives to change the lives of children through our program.

The fishing event held at Evert’s Resort was a tremendous success. All of our matches continue to talk about the fantastic time they had through this great opportunity. We appreciate and are delighted to hear that this event will continue in the future.

I am extremely excited to hear about your new organization Anglers As Role Models (ARM). The potential and possibilities that we have as partners is endless. I can see a vision of hundreds of children experiencing the joys of fishing, the value of camaraderie and the impact of Big Brothers and Big Sisters in their lives.

Thank you Dave and EFN for helping us help more children through our program. Keep up the great work.

    Sincerely,

    Little Moments…Big Magic!

Troy and I discussed a plan to have a “Little / Pro Mail” system set that BB/BS matches could mail information back and forth to our ARM Pros. This way you can stay in toutch with the kids you took fihing and meet up with those you’ll be taking fishing… ahead of time!
This would be real fun for the kids…. and it gives them a year round contact with our ARM Pros. Lots of potential here too for a ARM Pro to get interested in being a Big Brother / Big Sister in a match some day too.

Troy said that he would love to see one of our ARM Pros. up on stage… taking a winning check…. with his or her “Little” standing beside them!
That would be 2 cool what a picture.

James just posted an ARM donation of a Mankato Tent & Awning E-Z Set 8×8 ice house. It is under Gear in the EFN Classifieds. Donations of items which may be sold will give the donor the same premiums (ARM hats, shirts, etc..) as does a cash donation… and a tax deduction for the amount the item sells for.

    About this position…..

*Donation – processing, sales of tangible gifts

A good record keeper is needed, Two persons may chair the position both with access to books. Sales done and records kept of donated items and receipts for donations will be done by this group.

ARM is pleased to announce that ARM got its first donation! It was from the Fox Lake Conservation League in Sherburn, MN via Tom Miller of PoleBender Outdoors.

With this donation, a checking account has been set up with a debit card. ARM is ready to do biz!

Because of this, the donations committee needed to be started up. I met with (or talked over the phone to) all ARM board members and it has been “passed” that John Eggers be one of two chairpersons over the donations committee. John will watch the “books” by seeing that all donations are deposited into the checking account. He will also see all transactions done in both the checking account and debit card. John will not have the ability to write checks nor use the debit card. One other person will be chosen to “co-chair” this position… and soon. This person will also “see the books” and be an aid in selling of donated items. If you are interested in this position, please let John Eggers or me know.

Thank you John Eggers for your support and help.

Thanks also to the good folks at the Fox Lake Conservation League in Sherburn, MN and Tom & Jim Miller of “PoleBender Outdoors” for your donation.

    About this position…

*Education – programs with public/private schools

Institute a program & speakers schedule, and coordinate speakers schedules. Work with media to have AV (videos & cd) materials and printed matter available.

This position will be co-chaired by Jarrad and Lana Fluekiger as a husband and wife “team” effort. Here is a little background of each of them.

Jarrad has a degree from Penn State University in Fire Protection Services and a degree from the Madison Fire Academy. He is also a guide on the Mississppi River and a tournament fisherman. Jarrad shared with me that he feels very honored in this position and relates that he and Lana will work togther to teach kids about fishing. Jarrad says that without educating our youth there will be no more fishing or tournaments in the future.

Lana, masters as an Elementry Guidance counselor. Her degree comes from University of Wisconsin-Stout. She does realize the importance of education. Lana feels that without education… how is a person going to learn about a subject? For herself, she never grew up around fishing because she was never educated about it, since her family was not into the outdoors. Lana does realize the passion for fishing now being married to Jarrad for almost 8 years. He has taught her and the boys, Austin and Jordan, about the passion he has for fishing. Lana says she would of never understood fishing until she was educated about it. Lana has shared with me that she is very excited about being part of ARM.

Thanks you two for your interest and help.
