I recently bought a home theater system with a 5 disc dvd player. I was able to hook it up and it sounds awesome when I’m playing a movie. I have DirecTV and can’t seem to figure out how listen to regular TV in the surround sound. I bought the RCA plug in cables but can’t quite figure out which plugs I should use on the back of the directv box or reciever. It’s a JVC TH-C30 Help! Packer football starts next Sunday!

Are you using S video or RCA or both? Usually you connect the cables to the same color. Yellow to yellow, which is video. White to white, which is left audio. Red to red, which is right audio. If there is no yellow video input or outputs on the receiver or DirecTV receiver then connect both red and white audio cables and connect an s video cable from the receiver to the DirecTV receiver.

September 5, 2006 at 10:21 am #474956With the red and white RCA cables, you won’t be able to get the same 5.1 true surround that you get with the DVD player.
Most satellite receivers have either an optical (fiber optic) connection or one labelled ‘digital coax’ that carry the 5.1 true surround. If you stereo has multiple digital inputs, you’re best off connecting one of these. If not, then you’ll have to connect the red & white audio outputs and settle for the old-style prologic surround. It’s not nearly as good, but I’m not sure how many channels actually broadcast in digital surround anyway.
For Packer games, you’re better off without the sound… and the picture, usually.
September 5, 2006 at 12:50 pm #474974alot of them broadcast with digital. Also there are changes you need to make in the box to go from PCM to Dolby Digital if you use the digital output. Give me a call if you need a hand my company does cover the Hudson area.

Yes, s-video is just video, the red and white are the sound
September 5, 2006 at 11:42 pm #475194I’ve hooked up the RCA plug ins in every concievable way and it’s still not working.
September 6, 2006 at 12:59 am #475225What’s not working? the sound? try putting it into the cd in or something else, are you using the TV in? For whatever reason it seems if you use the tv in jacks you have to turn the volume way, way up to hear anything on some receivers, so I don’t use them, because I forget about the volume being way up and switch to the radio, and wella! everyone in a block’s radius knows I’m listening to the radio.
It’s also possible you need to change some setting in the box or stereo to make this work properly.
Now that I think of it…. Maybe it’s easier to go out from the tv to the reciever, that’s actually how I have mine setup.
September 6, 2006 at 1:28 am #475244Like Nick said, what’s not working, sound or video or both? Do dvd’s work, so it’s only your directv? Did your directv work before? Is the tv on the same video input channel as the rca and s video cables are connected to, example video 1,2, or 3?
September 6, 2006 at 1:31 am #475245the dvds i have played have performed flawlessly. All 5 speakers and the subwoofer. I can’t get the tv to play through the sound system. I realize it won’t be true surround sound. the directv works fine but not through the reciever just the normal tv speakers
September 6, 2006 at 1:59 am #475261Can you explain what inputs and outputs are on back of your TV and what they are labeled as, and on the back of your vcr if your have one hooked up, and also your DirecTV. Tell me how each wire is hooked up, example, the yellow DirecTV video output is connected to the yellow video input to the receiver, etc. How you have the TV connected to the receiver. What and how is the Directv hooked up to? Trying to help as much as possible, we’ll get this fixed yet! After you post this info and if we still can’t figure it out, a phone call maybe in order!
September 6, 2006 at 11:41 pm #475854You need to look for audio out jack(s) on the back of your satellite reciever (preferable) or TV and then plug these into audio in jack(s) on your receiver. Try if possible to match the component. TV to TV or SAT to SAT you can also use an AUX on the receiver. If you can get either of these to match with the proper patch cords you should be in business, you do not need both. When you watch the TV you will need to turn the receiver to the function that the audio in jacks are plugged into TV or SAT or AUX. The receiver should probably recognize the type of signal, but if it does not you should set the sound choices to Pro logic or Pro logic II.
September 6, 2006 at 11:55 pm #475858the RCA digital box is over 5 years old. there are 4 plug ins back there for audio- 2 for left and 2 for right. Do I need to buy another set of plugs? If I do it doesn’t look like there are enough plugs to accomodate this.
September 7, 2006 at 12:53 am #475891You need to take and hook up the rca cable from an out source should say out next to the plug, one red, one white there should be an “out” set (red/white) on the back of the cable box, there may also be an “out” (red/white) set on the tv, if there is a set on the tv that is the one I’d use. The other side needs to go into the new jvc speaker reciever into an audio in again it should say “in” right next to the plug, you will want to find the “in” plugs for tv or vcr. Then make sure you set the receiver to the correct setting tv or vcr which ever you used for the “in” set. Then I’d turn the volume up a litte on teh tv and a little on the vcr and you should be hearing sound from the tv, You may also want to look at you tv a little, most semi modern tv’s will let your turn off you tv’s speakers, some do it through a menu option, my panasonic at home has a little button on the back of the tv, back by the inputs that you press to turn the tv’s speakers off. You will probably want to do this for the best sound quality. You will need one set of rca cables that are not already hooked up for this, to work. If you don’t have an extra rca cable laying around you need one.
Let me know if this works. I love my home theater, I gotta help a guy out.
September 7, 2006 at 2:12 am #475957Thanks. I will give that a try. The movies sound great but I want stadium-like sound when the Pack whups up on da Bears
September 7, 2006 at 8:35 pm #476265When you play movies on the DVD you need to switch the reciever back to that and you should get the surround sound. Lot to keep track of, but it will all make sense after awhile.
