Got a letter for the county accessor the other day, stating that they are going to be coming around doing assessments. (DUH! Do they do something else?) They said in the letter that they would not enter your house unless you were home (Dang Right you won’t ). My question is, and I have always hear that you don’t have to let them in period. Is that true?

Yes, it’s true. You don’t have to let them in. But, why not. They are going to assess your property. I was talking to a buddy of mine who is on our Somerset Township Board and he mentioned that St Croix Co is re-assessing everyone. The assessor can make problems for you if he wants. Let him in. Be nice. You’ll get further that way.

technically, you don’t have to let them in.

however, if you don’t, then they will access your housef complete and in excellent condition. If your house is not in excellent condition, then you can discuss that with the accessor.

Letting them in is generally a good idea, so you can show them your basement isn’t finished, you don’t have that 3rd full bath they were told you do, etc. If you don’t let them in, my understanding is they assess you at the highest end, assuming you don’t want them to see you remodeled something, or added a bathroom or completely finished you basement.
