2000 Yamaha VMAX 200HP Intermittent Problems.

This is the problem that my friend is having with his motor. When boat is in forward and you go to take off the motor will occasionally bog down. It is NOT cutting out; it just will not achieve RPM’s past a certain point. The pressure gauge is also showing a low reading. After 1 or 2 reattempts it will run fine and do everything it is supposed to do. Motor runs completely fine at all other time. This engine has no problems starting up; in fact it starts up great. Please note, all of this has happened in deep water on the Croix and the boat has a minimal load.

He has been using injector cleaner and sea foam. However the problem still rears its ugly face. Currently he is at a loss as to where to start looking. Any ideas?

YAMAHA fuel additive ‘Ring Free’ – follow the directions and run a shock treatment for one tank of fuel, change plugs and then use it religiously going forward.

    This should help.

Good advice Ted. I would also recommend installing a new fuel filter. Good fishing.

Ok, from from an expert (by any means ) There may be issues with the 02 sensor there are ways to test it and check to see if it’s clean and operationg correctly, Here the how to link but that problem should show itself every time you run the motor. Now if sometimes it runs good, and sometimes not, There is a filter inside the vapor separator tank (VST) that may need to be cleaned. There should be fuel filters have they been checked or replaced? It also sounds like it could be a fuel pump though I don’t think those are intermitten problems.

Here’s a good Yamaha forum Seems to be tons of info on there, make sure you look past the default setting of posts for the last 45 days

I’ve just been doing a lot of reading lately since this is about the same motor I now have, hopefully something there was helpful
