Something is wrong with my dog

I have a 2 year old GSP. About a month ago he started stratching and basically hasn’t stopped since. He has been to the vet for it twice now. The first time she thought he had some mite, but couldn’t actually find any mites on him. So, she put some flea and tick stuff on him that is more powerful than the Frontline I was using. She also gave me some antibiotic. That combo seemed to help for a while, but then it got bad again. This time she told me to start giving him 50mg of Benedril twice a day. I am not sure how many more drugs I want to give the poor guy, but I have to get him to stop stratching himself raw. As of right now he has stratched a lot of the hair on his ears and under his front legs off. Has anyone ever seen anything like this or does anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds like it could be an allergy. Maybe to food or it could also be something from his enviroment. Try giving him a bath with HYPO-ALLERGENIC shampoo only. This will help wash off any allergens that he has come into contact with. If that doesn’t help you may want to try switching his food. I have a dog that has bad allergies and this is what we had to do untill we could nail it down. Just my $0.02. Good Luck!!!

I agree with Ben. Have you changed foods in the last month or so?

    Hello.

A similar thing happened to my dog and we traced it to the carpet stuff I use. My vet said a lot of dogs are also allergic to spray air fresheners. Especially tracking dogs for some reason. It had something to do with their sense of smell. But I quit using the carpet stuff and now she’s fine. I did give her Benadryl for a couple days just so she would be comfortable.

    That’s what I know.

had some thing similar happen to my older dog several years ago when she was young. It was food allergys. Alot of dogs are allergic to chicken. A new vet as suggested above is a good start. Read the back of your dog food bag, if it starts with chicken switch to a beef product.

A good vet should be able to do an allergy test, though I know they are not cheap, sometimes a simple food change can really help. My one dog has allegies too, we switched foods and she does much, much better now. It may not be possible to eliminate all sources, but eliminating a can make a huge, huge difference.

You may want to post your question on Walleye Central under general discussion. There is a vet who posts there regularly who is extremely knowledgeable – vetspet.ind is his handle.

I normally would not advocate another site while on this one but he has been a great resource to me when my previous lab was going through cancer.

Good luck as I regard my dogs as my children!!!
