Mille Lacs early October will be smokin’ for big walleyes at night trolling stickbaits shallow. Read up on some of the reports from last year for more info on that bite or just keep an eye on the Mille Lacs lake forum before you head out. We have superb coverage on that bite.

If you don.t have your place to stay paid for yet I would say to go to mille lacs. The three lakes you picked can all be very good in the fall, but mille lacs will give you more consistant action.Like James said watch the forums for reports, they will start coming in soon with fall right around the corner.

Without a doubt, my favorite time to be in the area. The dates you picked are perfect. I may even be up that week. School is in session. Lakes and parks are deserted.

So many good lakes in the area. Bimidji could keep you busy the enter trip. Other close picks: Cass, Kitchi, Rice, Pimusche, Ball Club and Winne. Most of these lakes have a consistent day bite on not only walleyes, but pike and pan fish too. Look for crappies to be moving into the same areas you would find them at first ice. Suspending off botton in the deeper areas of the lake. Walleyes early and late in the day.

Don’t forget the shotguns. Hundreds of miles of trails and back woods logging roads to take that morning walk in seach of a couple grouse.

Not to put the poo-poo on the Milly idea, but let’s face it. Mille Lacs is a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from Bimidji. And the daytime bite can be non-existent that time of year. Also keep in mind the fish you are catching on Milly are all mostly release slots. So, if you want to have a couple fish fries and some filets to take home, stay on the Bimidji lakes.

I have a freind who goes to Bemidji state, and i was thinking about heading up there that exact time too. I’m still figuring out where to fish, but from the sounds of it, you can’t go bad!

As far as Central Iowa fishing goes, Brushy is a pretty hard lake to learn from what i’ve heard, but once you figure it out, it’s a good lake. There is a forum for Brushy on this site. Brushy Forum

Another good site (if you can stand the annoying posts and people on the site), is Iowa Outdoors

Hope this helps you! Where in Central Iowa are you from?

Thanks for the advice everybody cant wait to get up there and get on some eyes. Its been a while since I have been walleye fishin so ill have to wipe the dust off of spinnin rods. Usually I just go after bass here in Iowa at brushy and badger creek… but that has been slow also.
One of my favorite bass lakes to fish in Little Fox north of bemidji.. that lake has always been fantastic

Great time to be coming up. The deep breaks on Bemidji are great places to try with a jig and minnow. The night bite is also good trolling cranks along the west shoreline or Diamond bar. You’re also very close to Cass and Plantan too. Stop in at Tabers or Bluewater in Bemidji and they’ll point you in the right direction.

Don’t forget to check out both the pod and clam bars. They are small but once you find them they can be very productive. Also with any wind at all, drift across the top of Diamond pulling crawlers (through the weeds) in 6-8ft of water.
    Good luck
