First Walleye!

This past weekend my family and I went to Fort Pierre, SD to visit my parents and take my four-year-old son Gavin on his first walleye fishing trip.

Above is a photo of Gavin on the ride from the Bad River to Antelope Creek on Lake Sharpe in Papa Rees’ (AKA Pa Karp ) boat. My son’s comment to me about grandpa’s boat–“His boat is faster than your’s Dad!”

After playing with the bait for a while and eating a bag of M&M’s, it is time to get fishing. Using a bowtie spinner and a crawler, Gavin cranked in this 14.5″ fish. Dad helped crank and Grandpa was the net minder. PWT here we come! Gavin caught two more walleyes and a smallie before the heat chased us off the water.

    Fishing is hard work!

After three hours in the boat Gavin was worn out. He actually fell asleep traveling back to the ramp at 50 mph. Those Lunds certainly do have a smooth ride and that OptiMax wasn’t too loud.

To keep the bass-o-philes happy, here is a picture of the smallie.

I almost hate to admit this, but he did catch the smallie before the walleye. In spite of that, he’s my only son and I still love him.

    Great pics

Especially when a guy has young kids, a necessary piece of equipment to carry in the boat at all times is a disposable camera. Nice work.

Nice catch Gavin. Don’t worry, everyone now and again will catch some “rough fish” while walleye fishing.

The best part of the whole deal was, Gavin took Granpa along just for his license. Granpa never caught a fish!!!!! lol

He lives in central SD. 50 miles east of where these guys are fishing. I was told by my uncle who lives in Pierre they had 111 and 115 respectively this weekend. They also had a good breeze, but when doesn’t SD. Sorry for the hijacking Curt.

You know why it is so windy in SD? Because Minnesota sucks and Wyoming blows! No, I won’t quit my day job to be a comedian.

It was hot and nasty during our time there. 109 on Friday, 111 on both Saturday and Sunday. We went up on Oahe on Saturday and I said something at 11 a.m. that I never thought I would, “Let’s go home. It’s too hot to fish.”

Ya’ gotta forgive my kid for pickin’ on Minnesota and Wyoming. He lives in LaCrosse and is a Denver Bronco’s fan, I think that “rarefied” air in Denver has affected his thinking! lol

Great post and congrats dad and Gavin. How did you keep him awake for 3 hours? What do they put in those M&M’s in South Dakota? Love2Fish.
