Just kind of curious to see if anyone has all plans to head to GODS country. Right now I’m in the planning stages with my old man. If I dont make it back, this will be my 3rd year in a row to not make it, previous to that I went 3 times in a row. I feel fortunate for that, but I want back in a major way…..

I will be heading back up in a couple weeks for 4 weeks of Silver salmon and Trout fishing.

We had our usual phenomenal King fishing again this year. Even the fly fisherman were averaging over 15 Kings landed per fisherman per day.

We are out on the Alaska peninsula and have arguably the best King salmon fishing in the world.

For those of you who have not been to Alaska yet start making plans now. Alaska is simply the most incredible place on earth and you will be too soon dead. Once you experience this most magnificent of places your only regret will simply be that you did not visit sooner.

Alaska really is the last best place.

5 minutes after I win the Powerball jackpot I’m on a plane to Alaska! Then after I get back I’m looking for a black, 1969 Dodge Charger with a 440/six pack, tinted windows, and an 8-track player in the dash.

    Oh well, back to work

With gas prices so high and the economy in the toilet I dont see how anyone can travel anywhere anymore.

    Dave,

I do not see the economy as being in the toilet, in fact I think that the economy is doing pretty darn good all things considered. The current price of oil has done little or nothing to slow consumption.

(Hot tip!)When I get done with the Silver trips I am going to have my better half meet me in Anchorage and we have an RV rented for a week at $524.00. That is a very affordable way to travel and fish South Central Alaska. This way we can go where we want, when we want, and stay as long as we want. If we save just $50 a day on food and drink by having our own along it will pay for about 1/2 the cost of the rental when you figure in the mileage and tax.

Mid September, no bugs, no tourists, hungry monster Trout on the flyrod, almost heaven!!!

    Mack…

Maybe you’re right. I’ve always assumed that an Alaska trip would be one of those “once in a lifetime” deals that I’d probably never be able to afford. I wonder how many forklift drivers are fishing the Kenai this fall? Just getting there would cost more than I could afford, I’m afraid.

That’s one consideration. Another is that there are other big ugly hairy predators after those fish besides you and me!. I don’t want to end up as Brown Bear poop.

The third issue is my skill level or preparedness. I’ve had a flyrod in my hands literally since I was 10 years old. I know I can handle 20 inch Bass, I’ve even caught some sizeable pike but I am suspicious that none of my experience will help when it comes to a 30 pound King or even a big Rainbow. I’d hate to spend a ton of money, get all the way up there, and then find out I’m not up to the task.

The stuff that dreams are made of, right? Maybe we can organize an IDA Alaska outing like we did with the Sturgeon Excursion. We could rent an old bus, put several kegs in the back, and point it North West.

Now you’re talking, except I am wondering who would drive the bus BACK I get the feeling it might be a one way —> trip

I’m not trying to steal this forum, but am planning a trip with my brother, and am looking for some ideas of places that you can go, where you can hike out an pitch a tent for a day or two. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, and again I appologize for highjacking this post.

    Thanks Emover.

I’m planning on an Alaska trip next year.

When is the best time to go for fishing?

If people are serious about a IDA trip to Alaska, I’d be interested.

When you fish from shore, what kind of gear?

    Fly, spinning? chest waders?

    Guide or no guide?

Do you need to set the halibut fishing up before you arrive or just call a day or 2 ahead?

    Thanks man.

Iv’e been wanting to do this for quite a few years and I think its time to pull the pin and do it.

Havent been there since June of ’03. Southern Alaska is nice and cool. My wife and I did some fishing there and for once I forgot anything and everything back home. When you are in Alaska your troubles are all gone, nobody is in a hurry, there are no noisy kids with the Japaneese cars booming the loud stereo. My wife and I would live up there, but I don’t know if I could stand the near 24 hrs of darkness in the winter. Furthermore, we wouldn’t get back to Wisconsin but once a year to see family. With it being so great up there, where would you take a vacation? I left Alaska and was a crank for a few weeks after getting back. When will I get back there? Not soon enough.
