Prop Question

I’m running a 14″*17 pitch 3-blade prop on a 2003 Suzuki DF140 four stroke, the aluminum prop is starting to get chewed up and was wondering if any one has any opinions or directions I should go. My thinking is going back to aluminum but a 19 pitch. What would be the difference if I went to a 4-blade prop?

    Thanks for any input

What RPM’s are you currently turning?
What are the MAX RPM’s for your motor?

    Jon,

I am running 5600-5800 RPM’s and rated for up to 6200.

If you go to a 19, you will drop your RPM’s by about 200-300. At your current RPM, you don’t want to drop any further. A 19p prop would likely feel like a dog of a prop.

A 4-blade prop will generally give you more bow lift and more “hook up” in turns. Generally better hole shot. You will lose a little top end on a 4-blade of the same pitch.

Go to your dealer and see if they have a loaner prop program. Try out a 3 and a 4 blade stainless in both a 15 and 17 pitch. Dropping to a 15 pitch will increase your RPMs to the upper end of the power range. You want to find the right match with pitch and RPM’s running near max.
You will know when you find the right prop. Motor will sing and boat will handle like a jet ski!

I’ve got the same motor (Johnson) and Crystal Pierz said to go with a 13.25 X 19 pitch in Stainless. That is what I’m running for Aluminum…….. I was told from someone else to go to go down a pitch to compensate for wieght??????? Does that sound correct??But what about Diameter???

What kind of boat are you running?

I’ve got a 2005 DF140 and I can turn 5500 rpm with a 14″ prop at 23 pitch. I am thinking of trying a 21 pitch to try and get closer to 6000 rpm.

I am running a 20′ SeaArk Bayrunner that weighs about 2500 pounds.

    I’m running an ’04 Crestliner Fish Hawk 1850. With A 14.25 X 19, I’m turning 6200 RPM’S before she’ll “kick out”.

I’m running a 1800 Lund Fisherman, close to you Chappy. My lower RPM may be because I might have a little deeper hull.
I’ll keep researching and let you know what I find out.

    Kimer:
Jon has given you some great information and asked the right questions.

I run an ’04 DF 140 on a Alumacraft Nav 17.5 at about the same RPM range with a three blade SS prop.

Check out the Suzuki web site for information on props. It has been a while for me but when I did, they had great information there.

    Good Luck!
