Just pulled 8-10 dozen yard snakes out of the back yard. Wow!! Hope the eye’s are hungry for them this year. Got a month supply at least!

This kind of post is one of those frightening ones. My wife watches birds out the window. Well, she encourages them with a daily buffet, actually. She’s afraid to post new birds online because the entire crew that’s online in her forums tends to migrate from spot to spot, politely trampling the grass trying to observe the latest rare find.

I can just see it now! Hundreds of fishermen, migrating from yard to yard, looking for the biggest and best crawlers each night. Okay, so who’s house is next?

We’ve been getting some of the biggest I’ve seen around lately. Humongous crawlers! The holes they’re making in the clay are about 4 inches across (well, okay a slight exaggeration) but I did lose a cat in one of them the other day. Seems to be a good night crawler year.

I have seen a few in my yard without really looking. What types of nights are especially good? Do you need rain/moisture or are they out each night?

    Thanks

Last night was a prime example!! Thunderstorm near sunset, in early May. Plus an already soggy ground. I was grabbing them 2 at a time!

You should be able to put out a hose and soak the ground for the next few nights and get the same results. 9-10 pm was prime time.

Us crawler nuts were bonused with a mild winter. The ground didn’t freeze as deep, in turn providing softer top soil for them fatties!! I can’t wait to get a few this weekend as well!!!

Maybe a stupid question, but I need to know. Do all the fertilizers/weed killers etc. affect the crawlers? I know that the crawlers that I have “pulled” never seem to keep as well or catch as many fish as there store bought counterparts

fertilizer and all those lawn chemicals are not really good for crawlers. I am sure it is out of print, but the old Fishing Facts magazine had a terrific book called Lunker’s Love Nightcrawlers. It was everything A-Z that you ever wanted to know about crawler finding and storing and conditioning. if you catch and use crawlers alot, you need to find a copy of this book. Jack.
