I never thought I would post anything like this so let me back track a bit. For those of you from Winona my brother owned Duane’s Heating.

About five years ago my brother died of a heart attack while on vacation. Ironically, he had a physicial a few months before his death. He died of a heart attack in the Bahamas.

Shortly thereafter, my ex’s sister and I were diagnosed with skin cancer, while my ex, my sister-in-law and three of the woman I worked with in the Treasury Dept were dianosed with breast cancer. All of us are in our 50’s and there is no family history of cancer. Anyway, the cancer spread quickly regarding my sister-in-law (ex’s sister) and she died after an operation in Rochester.

Things seemed to settle after that; however, last night my nephew called to say his mom’s cancer had spread to her bones and liver. Mayo had said a few years earlier they had caught it in time. The doctors say without chemo she will probably live for a few weeks, with chemo, perhaps a few months. Diagnosed by Mayo over 4 years ago the follow-up wasn’t great, but perhaps that is a different topic.

I am headed for Winona, along with my kids and the ex, and of course Charlayne’s kids. For those of you that know her, our families, etc please call me at my Dad’s house in Winona.

I belive in a God; however, there is nothing on earth that can convince me that our higher power is good. This cancer stuff reminds me a bit of when we were kids, bought baby chickens at easter, and played war with them via rubber band guns. The survivors (only once) were eaten after they grew up.

One other note, there must be something in the environment, food, persevatives, farm chemicals, that is causing these cancers. Heck, in the 50’s my entire neighborhood literally didn’t die till there 80’s or 90’s and my Dad will be 89 in September.

Something is wrong, but I have no idea what.

Anything positive you all have I wish to hear.

    Alvin, thanks

One quick note; Charlayne was thin, appeared healthy and got plenty of exercise. I still wonder about persavations in food, chemicals, etc.

That’s a lot 2fishy. My favorite quote in this time is….

Reach up to the Lord, if you can’t make it all the way, don’t worry…He’ll reach the rest of the way.

    Hang in there buddy.

When I lived in Iowa we had a rash of cancer deaths and I requested a study from the state of Iowa, you should be able to request one for your area as well. They sent me a study which compared our area with the rest of the state. What they do is look for spikes in the cancer rates. Ended up we were not out of the ordinary. Unfortunately there is just way to much of this disease. I lost a brother to it.
Hang in there and God Bless.

I think, when witness to death around us or even facing it ourselves, that a lot of us feel just as you do….”what good is God?” I have no logical explanation as to why cancer seems to be so prevelant these days, perhaps it is our diets, but regardless of what it is, NOW is the time for you to become closer to God! Perhaps that is God’s plan, perhaps being witness to death that doesn’t seem to happen to the right people or at a time most convenient for us is what reminds us to think of God and to remember Him….even if your heart is heavy and your burdens many.

One thing that so many of us get confused over in life is that our plans and God’s plans may not be the same! We all live our lives for the moment and often times we forget that what God has in store for us is bigger and greater than any of us can imagine! God did not promise that your life here on earth would be easy, pain-free, or lack sadness. But, he did promise you a place with Him, in Heaven eternally, where all things are new, and pain and sadness are no more…….imagine that, if you will? I don’t know if any of us can imagine it because we are caught up in believing our life here on earth is all there is but, if you have faith and if you believe in Christ, one day YOU too will know what good there is in our “Higher Power”!

The fact that your post stirred something in a person like myself to respond, and put my religious heart on my sleeve, which I normally would not do, is proof positive that there is a God and He is good! Don’t let sadness and grief shake your faith! If you look around you, even the support you came to find by posting on this site, you will see that God truly is good! You and your family will be in my prayers….keep your head up and don’t lose faith!

    hey Sinker,

thanks for sharing your thoughts and putting that sleeve on. I have to go to a funeral tommarow for one of my close friends who was a Godly man. I am not sure where he was in his walk because I know that his road was full of rocks and potholes. he seemed to get frustrated easily when things took a turn for the worst. but now your post has stirred me to add something:

it is by the grace of God that I am still alive and able to talk about fishing and making fun of the Jalope. I had kidney failure while I was on a training mission on the big Island in Hawaii. I was rushed into surgery after a 45 minuet helicopter ride which I never knew I took. I had less then 1 cm of tissue left between life and death. I also chocked on a piece of burger in school, if it wasn’t for the wrestling coach that noticed that I was making the choking sign, I wouldn’t be here neither. all of my friends thought I was joking and they where laughing at me. I am like some guys, I keep my religous beliefs in check until I am asked or I am fellowshiping with friends of mine. but again, thanks for sharing what you had to say, it was nice to hear.

    thanks

I have faced death in a most horrific way so please read on!!!!
It is difficult to trust in or believe in God when we fall on hard times, but the hard times are there to strengthen our faith and to get us to reach out to God for help in a situation that we can’t control. If we went through life without difficult times we would never have to trust in God because there would’t be a great need to. I am not trying to minimize your situation in any way so please read the full post.
Last fall was an EXTREMELY DIFFICULT ! time in my wife’s family as my wife’s sister’s 17 year son (our nephew) Murdered her and her husband at their auto glass shop in Hastings,MN. They were awesome people and the grief was so heavy that it physically hurt in our hearts. I have never experienced a pain like that! nor do I ever want to again. We all walked around like zombies that week waiting to wake up from the horrific nightmare we were facing. The 10 months since then have shown many different reactions in her family from outright hatred to forgiveness for our nephew who did this. The different reactions to this were drawn on parallel lines to the persons lack of faith and trust in God and those who have a relationship and faith and trust in God and the knowledge that we would see them again in Heaven.
What I am trying to say is don’t give up hope, work through the pain.Talk it out with people in your family or understanding friends. Don’t side step it or bury it as it will eat away at you and call out to God for help and trust in Him. If He can create the awesome sonrises and sunsets we experience, How much more majestic is He.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers through this difficult time !!

Thanks to all of you. I appreciate your comments, they are very helpful and supportive.

My sister-in-law died at 8:05 AM this morning at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.

As for the God thing I sometimes think he is keeping me around to look after the kids, both my side and my former brother/sister-in-law.

I am sorry to hear that, I just had a funeral today for one of my hockey friends who died on 694 last sunday. he lost control of his bike and went into incoming traffic. he left behind 2 daughters and 2 wifes. his club that he rides with came to the funeral, so we had a funeral procession that was about 2 miles long and it went down 35E to 494 west to 5 east. he was a very Glodly man that was trying to make himself a better husband, friend, and father to his kids, but he would take the time out of his day to lend an ear to someone that needed to chat. I am going to miss him alot!!
