I need your help. I have a 1998, Evinrude Intruder, 150 horse outboard. It starts great, and runs great, but here is the problem. After I’ve run it to get to my fishing spot, I shut it down. I fish for a while, then try to start it again. It starts, but when I try to shift it, it stalls out. Even in idle it tends to stall. Like it is not getting any gas. This will happen 5 or 6 times. Then it runs through it. When it gets through it, it runs great, until I shut down again. The bulb still has pressure, and it had a new fuel pump put in. Any suggestions?

have you checked your spark plugs??? Once I got my motor started from bad plugs, it also ran really rough at idle speed, shift into gear same thing! I recently changed plugs and everything is running smoothly now!!!
    Just a suggestion!!!

i beleive that i remember hearing that those particular motors have a problem called heat sink. from my understanding the way that the fuel lines are run on the motor cause the lines to get so hot that the fuel gets air bubbles in it and starts to vapor lock. call dan at team marine in lax 608-784-4162

I have a 97 Vindicator that the VRO pump went bad. I have a 225 but the original symptems were vary similar. the next time you start the motor after it has heated. Pump the ball to see if this makes any change. If so you may have an issue with the VRO.

Shoot me a PM if you need.

Check you PM – Same problem here. You should call me.. Maybe we can put our heads together & figure it out together.. Evinrude 175 Faststrike same thing.. Had in & out of the shop.. Have suspicians on what’s wrong but not 100% sure.

I had the same problem with my Johnson 150 Faststrike. A mechanic friend of mine said those motors tend to have carb issues. I had the carbs rebuilt and it’s run fine ever since. Now I periodically run a bottle of carb cleaner thru the gas and haven’t had any more problems.

Also.. I actually had to read your post twice to make sure I wasn’t the one that wrote it.. I have the identical problem.. To add to this… I can actually hear a misfire happening.. not every revolution but intermittent. If I press the key in giving it gas it sometimes keeps it from stalling. I think it’s running lean. Yesterday I squirted starting fluid around the plastic throttle plate between the carbs and the intake while it was running. I assume if there was a vacuum leak that the fluid would suck into the carb & I could hear a change in the running of the engine.. When I sprayed around one of the lower carbs slightly with fluid… it ran better. A few seconds later..I must have sprayed too much starting fluid near the spacer for the carb because it killed immediately afterwards. My assumption right now is that I have a vacuum leak behind the carb at the spacer plate.. I haven’t looked into the VRO yet but once I get the manual for it.. I’ll know more… In the meantime.. anyone elses suggestions are appreciated.

P.S. Plugs look to be in MINT shape

They are prone to heat sink, but that usually happens in very warm weather when you are idling or running slow for extended periods, fuel helps to cool an engine down…so full throttle type running wouldn’t cause this. And when it happens It usually won’t start at all. Last time it happened to me I just sprayed a little off! into the carbs and the propellant was enough to get her to light and run fine. My plugs needed replacement after just two years… so definitely replace those, you’d be surprised how bad they’ll look.

Heat sink or heat soak. Happens to dang near every Intruder or Fast Strike I’ve ever seen. Here is a link on it.

Check the response from “way2Slow” in this one.

I found pumping the primer (pushing the key) gets you up and going, I presume by breaking the vapor lock.

Great motors other than the power packs and the heat soak issues.

It isn’t at ful throttle though, but when you start after sitting for a while. Definitely worse in warm weather, but would happen once in a while when cooler.
