Hey there. Thinking about trying some new tactics for walleye. At least new to me. Trolling with planner boards. Looking for some help. What boards are the best. What equipment do I need besides the boards themselves. Do I use them with spinning gear or bait casting gear. Anything else you can throw at me that might be helpful would be appreciated. Thanks

Here is my recommended setup for anyone starting with boards.

1.) Planer Boards (I recommend the yellow “Off Shore” boards) (I also upgrade the release on the face of the board to one of the lock down clips)
2.) Tattle tale flag kit (you can make your own, I can tell you how)
3.) Weighting system (I would recommend getting a snap weight system, it’s the easiest to learn and most interchangeable).
4.) I would recommend fiberglass rods. I use the Gander Guide Series telescoping planer board rods 8+ footers. These glass rods are fairly soft tipped. ($39.99 each, but they usually have $10 off)
5.) I also recommend line counter reels. You can get by with most of the line counters in the $30 to $40 range without a problem
6.) A variety of harnesses and cranks, send me a PM if you want more harness info.
7.) One of the best tools, the Precision Trolling Book volume 8. This is the best literature you’ll ever buy for trolling.

I can get into more detail if you’d like, but these are the basics.

    Just an FYI!!!!!

Cabelas does have the sealine 27 line counters and the cabelas brand planer board rod on sale right now for 99 bucks!!! If I remember right the line counter is almost 80 buck so your basically getting a planer board rod for 20 bucks!
These rods are telescopic and are available in the 8’6″ model and also in the 9′ as well!!! They also double for a great bottom bouncing rod or 3 way rod as well!’
Just thought I would let everyone know!!!!!

    That’s a great deal.

Hey there. Thanks to all for the information. I’m now a classroom graduate of Planner Boards 101. Now for some on the water experiance. Looking to get out tomorrow on pool #4 with some lead core trolling and if I can pick up the boards this evening, I’ll be giving them a try too. Wish me luck. Thanks again. Backtroller II

If you still need a line counter check out te Abu Garcia reels. 2 sizes, 5500 and 6500(C-3 reels). These are new and are great. Priced the same as Diawa reels.
