Do we have any geocachers out there?

My dad in PA has been doing it for awhile now, and is always telling me how much fun it is. So I went out and bought myself a GPS last week so we could geocache. Tyler and I have found 2 caches so far and we are having so much fun! It is a really fun way to get out and see some beautiful places that we normally wouldn’t have noticed.
Plus, I have a really bad habit of getting lost ALL the time… so my GPS will help me with that too!

    Ok.

    From GeoCaching.com…

    What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.

Its been around since 2000. People are supposed to place the caches somewhere interesting or beautiful. A fun way to see the sights. There are lots of other fun things associated with it as well…. Travel Bugs that are trackable and have destinations that cachers help them reach or achieve, GeoCoins that are trackable or collectable, Benchmarks that are just fun historical things to find and log, virtual caches…

It is a ton of fun with kids, fish any time! But its fun for big kids too.

Tyler calls it Treasure Hunting. He likes finding the ones with toys in them and trading for them.

    Hope that helps!

Right now there are thousands of geocaches around. It is a lot of fun to find one.

I’m one of the guys who made the FIRST geocahce in Minnesota. It’s called Alvin’s Phone Line stand, because we put it under a deer stand where a guy named Alvin used to hunt.

This is the exact reason I enjoy it.

It’s good to see fellow IDA folks interested in caching.

I found it. It was hidden on 11/5/2000 and it is still active today by the looks of it. How cool! Thanks for sharing that tid bit of info with us, Rootski!

Yes, it’s still there and active. I can’t remember exactly when we started this but it was quite a few years ago. If you go to the geocaching.com website you can search on it and see the history. If you know the back door way in it’s not to bad. If you just follow the GPS heading from the road it’s a pretty bad!

Make sure you get geocache loaded onto google earth! That’s the greatest thing i’ve ever seen.

Anyone in Hayward area, try for “BILLY BASS”

Billy Bass looks like a fun one!! Little too far from me, but maybe someday!

I’ve been geocaching since this spring. I was the same way…I heard about it, thought it sounded like fun, bought a gps unit and have been hooked ever since! It is a great excuse to get outside and have something fun to do with my 4 year old daughter….she loves it! We have seen many beautiful places and parks we would have never known existed, some only miles from our house! Usually if we have an evening with nothing planned (althought those are rare) I’ll ask my daughter what she wants to do and her answer is usually “geocache”!! It’s also a great way to break up a long road trip…

We did this for the first time over the July 4th holiday (thanks to Sherry’s post). It was a blast! Thanks.

The 2nd hunt we finally found one. I actually spotted it first buried in a stump but backed off and had the kid (10 year old) look and find it. His eyes about popped out of his head when he saw the camo container. It was a lot of fun hiking through trails and doing some bushwacking .

Our next excursion will be ones that are ranked a little harder.

Oh, BTW- after we took a prize, we left a bunch of rubber lizards, worms, craws, etc… you know… old fishing lures which other people should find fun!

We haven’t been out recently. Been seeing some new caches posted though that I may have to go check out!!

Hey, maybe IDA members could set someting up like this, a cache at different fishing spots with lures and hotspot GPS numbers for the lake inside.

Tyler and I found 3 more caches today! We visited a nice park out in Minnetonka called Big Willow Park. We had never been there before, but I think we’ll be going back!!
