Anyone have a desktop digital photo printer that they really like? We have had an Epson photo printer for about the last 18 months, and it just pooped out for the 2nd time since we’ve owned it. So, it’s time for a replacement. We have a 21-month old daughter and a second one on the way, so with the kiddies and my fishing addiction, we take and print plenty of pics.

epson has always been the biggest player in photoprinters on a professional level… but lately some pros are switching to HP… I have a couple of epsons… and I have trouble with both right now… so I may be looking to switch… I cant say if the HP are more reliable… but one can hope… but I hear the quality is there…. and epson does put out a very good printer… but… well… sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do…

I’ve has an HP Photo printer at work,(over 15 months now) and my wife is going on 2 years with her HP photo printer at home. I think the quality improved considerably about 3-4 years ago when they began using a different ink sampling system. As far as durability, I think they hold up well. I know that my wife has put several hundred pics out of hers for scrapbooking purposes. While she finds it more convenient(economical) to use commercial printers for large orders she makes a bunch herself and is pleased with her HP.

My epson Crapped out on me a couple months ago and finally about to replace it. I had mine for 3 years and it was my fault it went out. With epson printers you need to print once a week using all the colors or the ink clogs up the jets. In my case I was too cheap to replace the ink and it went dry. If you have the same problem sometimes you can use rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip and take out the ink cartdrige and clean the jets. I have done this more than once but this last time I waited too long.
My wife is in grad school so we print a lot of pics and documents we are looking at buying an Epson R320 or R340. The R320 is on sale a comp usa until friday. This printer has 6 seperate colors to get a better range of colors in photos and helps out especially with skin tones. on the downside it costs about $80 to replace all of the ink. But you can also use refills for much cheaper.
What ever printer you decide on I would suggest individual cartridges and 6 colors. normally black, yellow, cyan, light cyan, magenta, and light magenta.

Good luck there is lots of information on the printers at different store websites.

I’m running a canon i960 I really like, no problems, 6 ink tanks, that pretty nice. Used to be the one of the fastest, and pic quality is great. Comes with a little 4×6 printer paper holder for 4×6 photo paper I really like that I can leave 8×11 normAL Paper in there, and flip it down when I want photos.

    Me too!

I like Canon over HP “both good” because of the cheaper replacment ink cartridge cost.

I use an Epson R220 for printing directly to CD and DVD’s.

    Hey Brooktrout,
I am very happy with my HP. I have a Photosmart 8700. It is over kill for most people, but if you want great quality and a reliable machine it is awesome! I would be happy with any HP. And no I do not work for HP.

Thanks everybody for your input. It’s the wife’s birthday tomorrow, so it looks like the kid and I are heading out tonight to get a new printer.

Don’t forget extra photo paper “4×6 8×10” I like to wait on the extra ink cartridges until the printer tells me I’m running low if they sit around to long they dry out.

    Brooktrout,
Pier is right. I would wait for the indicators to tell you to get a new cartridge. Do not judge the first cartridge for lenghth of print. It is known that the first cartridges that come with the machine are not 100% full. They want to soak you for the next cartridges as fast as they can.
