Battery Issues

I am having some trouble with my starter battery. The battery loses power in a hurry. Its a brand new battery and everything was connected correctly.

Dead on the water during a tourney sucks!! I am glad I had the power box with but thats no fun starting your boat with it everytime you move.

    I appreciate any ideas..

    Is it full of water??
If it is then take it to a auto store and have it checked, sometimes you can get a bad one.

What is the date of manufacturing?
Some sit on the shelf tooo long.

Also it might be a good time to check your outboard alternator.

Make sure your terminals are clean and your connections are tight. I always scrub my terminals and connectors with a wire brush before I tighten everything up.

As long as we are talking about batteries…I replaced on of the trolling motor batteries on my 24v system…just want to make sure I connect it up correctly…

Trolling motor ground wire to black on battery 1
Battery 1’s red to battery 2’s black terminal.
Battery 2’s red terminal to trolling motors red power led…

    I think that correct??

I had the same problem with a marine starting battery where it would lose power about every other time out. I carry a set of jumper cables in the boat for such instances. My problem was that I never ran the boat long enough to put any charge on the battery and running the livewell, bilge, radio, lights and locators off of the starting battery would tend to run it down in a hurry. I got tired of having to charge this battery every other time I use the boat so I invested in a big deep cycle battery for the starter just like the 2 I have for my trolling motor. I still have to charge the battery every once and a while but I can go for a good month between charges.

BUT what do you need a trolling motor for.
Throw out a big anchor, throw out a big sinker along with a big sucker AND wait.

    Slider…backup at night is a good thing…even if it’s a trolling motor!

JollyAnn Marine had a special of 10 amp 3 bank on board chargers at one point…it might be still going. It was a Minnkota…

I run a 1.5 mil candle power spot light…a lot at night without the motor running…so when I get home at night…I just plugg’er in and no worries.

Works good for over wintering it too..no need to pull the batteries..just check the water…clean the terminals and plugg’er in.

    I like easy!

Anyone have a battery they could suggest? I took the first one I bought back because I thought it was bad.

I also am having trouble with my 3 bank charger. It won’t charge up full showing the green light. Red and green all the time when its plugged in. I know the charger only charges the trolling motor batteries. Could something be grounded taking all the power out of my boat?

    Thanks everyone for your input!!

Who told you that??? What kind of charger is it…and since I assume you’ve used the charger and your battery goes dead…you either have a bad battery or something’s constantly draining it…

If it’s not fully charging…as I think you’ve indicated my the charger lights not working properly…you have a bad cell.

I would bet my .25 cents on it…

    I use Fleet Farms…

Another vote for the everstart from wal-mart. For me those batteries have lasted the longest and have had the best running time on one charge that i can find.

Everstarts for me, too. If the battery goes bad Walmart is pretty good about replacing them under warranty. Sounds like you got a bad battery right off the shelf. Bad cell? Bring it back and get a new one??

I just started replacing all of my batteries with Optima Blue Tops in my boat. I have seen what these bad dogs can do trolling, and recharging. I know they are expensive, but they out last other batteries 2-3 times longer and the way they can be recharged so fast is great.

Wallmart Everstart. Good battery at a decent price!
