Regardless of your political views, this certainly gives us all food for thought.
Sen. Glenn was so quick on his feet.

When you speak from the heart and with passion, you never know what comes out.
    SENATOR JOHN GLENN SAID:

Things that make you think a little…….

    1. There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq
    during the month of January…..

In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the month of January.

That’s just one American City ,about as deadly as
the entire war torn country of Iraq.

    2. When some claim President Bush shouldn’t have started this war,state the following;

FDR…led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did.

From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.

Truman…finished that war and started one in Korea , North Korea never attacked us.

From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,334 per year.

John F. Kennedy….started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us.

Johnson…turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost,
an average of 5,800 per year.

Clinton…went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent, Bosnia never attacked us.

He was offered Osama bin Laden’s head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing.

Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.

    3. In the two years since terrorists attacked us
President Bush has liberated two countries,

    Crushed the Taliban,

    Crippled al-Qaida,

Put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran and North Korea, without firing a shot, and
captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.

The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking, but…It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51-day operation.

We’ve been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Ted Kennedy to call the Police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick, killing a woman.

    Wait, there’s more………………….

Some people still don’t understand why military personnel do what they do for a living. This exchange between Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard Metzenbaum is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive, impromptu speech, but it’s a lso a good example of one man’s explanation of why men and women in the armed services do what they do for a living.

This is a typical, though sad, example of what some who have never served think of our military.

JOHN GLENN ON THE SENATE FLOOR Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2004

Senator Howard Metzenbaum to Senator Glenn: “How can you run for Senate when you’ve never held a real job?”

Senator Glenn: “I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by antiaircraft fire on 12 different occasions. I was in the space program.

It wasn’t my checkbook, Howard; it was my life on the line. It was not a nine-to-five job, where I took time off to take the
daily cash receipts to the bank. I ask you to go with me .. as I
went the other day… to a veteran’s hospital and look those men – with their mangled bodies – in the eye, and tell THEM they didn’t hold a job! You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the widows and orphans of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee… and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their Dads didn’t hold a job.

You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in
Arlington National Cemetery , where I have more friends buried than I’d like to remember, and you watch those waving flags. You stand there, and you think about this nation, and
you tell ME that those people didn’t have a job? I’ll tell you, Howard Metzenbaum; you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men – SOME MEN – who held REAL jobs. And they required a dedication to a purpose – and a love of country and a dedication to duty that was more important than life itself. And their self-sacrifice is what made this country possible.

I HAVE held a job, Howard! What about you?”

For those who don’t remember – During W.W.II, Howard
Metzenbaum was an attorney representing the Communist Party in the USA

If you can read this, thank a teacher…. If you are reading it in English, thank a Veteran.

I think that about sums it up! Every once in a while a politician says something that cuts throught the crap and really hits home. It does tend to put things in perspective…

    This from Truth or Fiction.com

    The Truth
This exchange did take place but not on the floor of the Senate, but the wording of Glenn’s words if fairly accurate.
It was during the campaign debate in 1974 when Metzenbaum was running for reelection and Glenn was challenging him.
Glenn and Metzenbaum had also run against each other for the same seat four years earlier, a race that Metzenbaum had won.
A few days prior to the debate, Metzenbaum made a widely publicized statement that said that Glenn had never met a payroll (he didn’t actually say that he’d never held a real job).
In other words, Glenn had been a military man not a businessman, like Metzenbaum, who had created a major newspaper and a nation-wide parking company.
Metzenbaum did not repeat that charge during the debate, but Glenn came prepared to respond to it and did it so powerfully that he also went on to win the election.

If Howard Metzenbaum represented the Communist party as an attorney during World War II, we have not found substantiaton for that

In 2005, someone prefaced a John Glenn/Howard Metzenbaum article with the item about Iraq. This addendum has nothing to do with John Glenn — it’s an anonymous piece that has been floating around the Internet since 2004, but because it has been tacked onto an article about Glenn’s 1974 perpared speech, readers have been misled into thinking that it is a transcription of something he said.

Thank you Lip Ripper! My father served in the Korean conflict and was a inner city police officer for 25+ years. The people who have they heads in the sand saying we are doing no good in Iraq should talk to the relatives of a 9/11 victim and know this could happen to them any day of the week. Thank the armed forces and everything they have done for you. You sleep soundly every night thanks to them and the sacrifies they have made!

Im behind the troops over there and everyone thats war related thats over there 110%. Its too bad that the commanding military brass can’t do what they want and really kick some a– but it seems the polititions won’t have it. Its discusting that it seems that old osama could have been out of the picture a long time ago and probably many others but because of some poor excuses he was let go, maybe im wrong but thats the way it seems to me. Now that were over there trying to straighten out the country buy taking out the militant muslims that have to be taken out because they have attacked our country and many others and have no plans of stopping why not do it right, send more troops, hunt them down and get it done. Im behind our troops all the way and i hope they get all the ignorant militants as soon as possible and can stay as safe as they can! If we don’t stop the militants that are reaking havoc all over the world now and forcing the muslim religion on others like whats being done in the phillipiens its going to be harder to do it later, we all know what thier objective is.

I am neither Democratic or Republican only share the views of those who are willing to say No to political contributions and for these people who have run in the past that meet these criteria are those whom I’ve voted. hmmmmm. I know it takes advertising to win…..anyway “Weapons of Mass Destruction” the big key issue right? How do the complainers think 300,000 people were killed? Weapons of little Destruction? I mean come on lets get real here. And I REALLY don’t have the whole story- truth- or are in the position to know all the facts and never will. Who shot Kennedy? I’m with everyone else that supports the troops. These terrorists believe we are the reason for there lifes problems of “forcing” our religious beliefs in their narrow minded views. Killing us is the quick answer to serving their “god” So moraly and biblicaly,I feel, there is no wrong with defending our land from the enemy I’m just glad it’s not my job to figure out who our enemy is! Thanks troops for letting me go fishing today in peace…get em’

Can somebody tell me how Iraq was involved in 9/11?

“The 27 classified pages of a congressional report about Sept. 11 depict a Saudi government that not only provided significant money and aid to the suicide hijackers but also allowed potentially hundreds of millions of dollars to flow to Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups through suspect charities and other fronts, according to sources familiar with the document. One U.S. official who has read the classified section said it describes ‘very direct, very specific links’ between Saudi officials, two of the San Diego-based hijackers and other potential co-conspirators ‘that cannot be passed off as rogue, isolated or coincidental.’” Of all the hijackers, 15 of the 19 were Saudi. Josh Meyer, “Report Links Saudi Government to 9/11 Hijackers, Sources Say,” Los Angeles Times, August 2, 2003.

Heres another thing i wonder about too. When they had Osama Bin Laden trapped in the tora bora mountains from what i heard at the time American forces could have taken him. Heres another stickler, i also heard the Saudi’s put up the money to build those tunnels where he was hiding, why did the saudi’s build them and what for? My question is if they knew where he was then why didn’t they take him. By the time they had him trapped in those tunnels they knew how dangerous he was so why didn’t they knowing he was an absoulte threat to the United States. Im sure they knew the Saudi’s built those tunnels and they probably weren’t surprised they found him there, i think they expected to find him there. If the Saudi’s built those tunnels, when did they? was it during the war in afghanistan or befor it and why did they. What was thier interist in building them so far from thier own country?
