Bought a rod out of the bargan cave at Cabela’s, on the first line guide above the reel the ” dope ” covering the thread on the guide is peeling off. Is there a special “dope ” for this or can I do a quick fix with some clear nail polish. Either one I will have to go out and buy, no ladies around the house to ” borrow ” some from.

I would recommend a two part instant epoxy(wal-mart is where I bought mine)- in a clear color- and a small paintbrush. I have used this on many rods, and I have never had to re-apply!

A custom rod builder uses epoxy finish on guides as well – however the average run of the mill epoxy will yellow in the sunlight over time usually and many of them will become brittle in the UV light – and won’t be as flexible as true epoxy guide finish.
I see you are from Iowa – if you are nearby it wouldn’t be a big deal to contact me and arrange to have the guide repaired properly. If you can’t arrange that, Cabelas in Prairie sells foil packets of two part epoxy guide finish that should do the job for you… Let me know if I can be of assistance. Chuckles

hey guys..speaking of rod repair. Is there a special string that you use for wrapping the eyelet on? I have two rods that have broken eyelets on. In the past I would throw the rods out (they are cheap ones). But I really like these and they don’t make them anymore. So I want to attempt to put new eyelets on. I see your comments on the epoxy, but what kind and where can I get string to wrap? Thanks

Thanks Luke, went to Wal-Mart this morning after work and got some. Even got a couple small $1.00 tubes to throw in the boat for emergencies. Made the repairs in about 5 min, looks great ! Sure feel more comfortable buying epoxy than fingernail polish ! Thanks to all who wrote in, the UV shouldn’r be a big thing, rods are stored in the rod locker with sleves.

    Glad it worked Owen!
Chuck- I haven’t had any problems with mine, but I didn’t buy the cheap stuff. I bought the most expensive epoxy they had at wally-world. I usually tend to do that at walmart…

DHnitro – take up bigdogs offer – the thread used for rod wrapping has no silicone added (store bought sewing threads can) which can cause significant problems with the epoxy coating later… you are better off to use a thread like bigdog has offered to send you to prevent such problems upfront. Or purchase a thread specifically made for rod-building.

Luke – I am glad it worked for you this time – in the long run the epoxies developed for rod building are designed to handle the task at hand. They are also designed to be crystal clear and to not yellow over time. A five minute epoxy is one to be cautious with – much easier to get bubbles in the finish and they are almost impossible to remove due to the quick setup. A rod builder would never use such finish over thread because of such properties – glad it worked for you but if you are going to be doing further repairs this stuff works well and can be very protable to take along on trips etc. The price is right for link.

I have used it and it isn’t bad finish – there are better ones out there but these are handy little packets. What you used may have worked alright for now but it isn’t really ideal for the job… the epoxy you used is kinda like using a med. light rod for muskies – it may get you by for a while, but sooner or later you are likely to regret it.
