I drove by a timber today and seen a nice buck with what looked like really nice mass. By the way it looked about 2 1/2″ at the base and about 4″ to 6″ high, he’s going to be a nice one if his rack dosen’t go straight up and has some width to it. He looked fairly wide already. He was with another smaller one and his size didn’t get my attention that much like the bigger one did.

Mossydan,
I have seen a few decent bucks that I would guess to be 2 1/2 year olds. They are where about 10″ high and wide, with the 5th and 6th points starting to form. My hunting partner saw one that was 16’+ wide and had 6 pts already. Think that ones will be a shooter? Can’t waitJune 14, 2006 at 11:16 pm #453838I didn’t know they were that wide already. I don’t do much scouting in the spring, only what i see from the road, it does sound like he is a pretty nice one. I know a guy who lives just north of town that raises deer that i used to shoot 3d’s and hunt mushrooms with and i should go look at his bucks he uses for breeding then i’d know. What state do you live in.

I thought you were talking about Mille Lacs walleye.
I thought it was a Catholic question!

I’m in western Wisconsin. I finally saw one myself saturday evening basically the same size. His brows are done but his 7th and 8th points are starting to sprout and he was 17″ inside.June 20, 2006 at 4:59 pm #455027I seen another nice buck two nights ago and he was fairly wide. He had his brows of about 6″ with two 6″ tines on each of his beams and the points on the mainbeams. He was a solid 17″ and i know hes got quite a bit of growning to do yet because of the width of the green mass thickness of his tines, he looks like he’s going to be pretty nice. A few years ago across the street from me alot of the racks had more heigth than a guy likes to see, nice numbers on the tine count but no width, maybe 12″ to 14″. Since then it looks like the genes have turned around and more width is showing up. About 5 years ago there was a really nice one that was nice and wide, my boy and his friend seen him and said he was atleast a 16 pointer, but i heard a couple of stories about him disappering all of a sudden by a railroad worker via pistol at night. This guy was rubbing hard 8′ off the ground through the bark and deep into the sapwood, must have been standing on his hind legs rubbing to protect his harem, i know where the tree is and i’ll get some pictures of the rub, the tree is about 12″ at the base and has grown some but not much. I was too busy last year to get any pictures but i’ve got the time this year, I think I will and post some of what i get, seen 2 fawns today both with younger doe’s too. The nice crisp late fall air is just a 5 months away,,, Anybody thinking bowhunting besides me?

I saw some monsters on the way up to red this weekend. In fact I almost crashed my wife’s SUV while looking at a huge set on velvet antlers. I had to pull over a back up to get a better peek. I only got a couple seconds on this buck. He was very wide and was starting to have some heavy beems popping out. Just a little north of Foley. I might be snooping around the area later this year to do some scouting. He took off and I never even saw the other 2 bucks behind him with the same pre makings of monster bucks. The old heart was pumping heavily.
87 days, 2008 hours, 125280 mins., 7516800 seconds away but I am not keeping track.

June 21, 2006 at 10:18 pm #455358He does look like a nice one. He dosen’t seem to be showing any tines, wonder whats up there, he looks like an older buck, maybe thats it but a nice one though.
