I know this probably a dumb question, but if they lost all info how do they get your name and address to send you the letter?

They didn’t lose all of the info. A laptop computer with this information was stolen. I’m sure the file on the laptop with this info wasn’t the only copy of that file!

The laptop that was stolen had a copy of a database with thousands of names in it. Now the VA is getting our current contact info from the IRS so they can mail us this letter. Which makes you wonder, can I trust the VA with any info?? Thanks to the IRS for sharing more with a flawed process.

If you haven’t paid your taxes lately, maybe the IRS is still looking for you.

It kinda makes me wonder???????????????????????? The theif broke into his house and stole a laptop for the laptop not the information. Probably pawned along time ago. Now more then likely the theif had no concern about what was on it. But by all this big bug a boo and the giant reward for information.

Don`t ya think every one that puchased a used lap top is all of a sudden trying to find out what was or is on the hard drive. I would of thought it was at least password protected. Which isn`t a great deal of protection but the average guy or theif would just reformat the harddrive and be done with it.

Unless he learned about what information was on it before the fact of reformating. SSSSssooooo did they cause more of a problem by making a huge deal of this stolen laptop?????????

    Just pondering

    Tom,

A simple format of a hard drive does not necesarily whipe all the info off it. When replacing pc’s we run a special application again the drive, we then drill holes in the drives. I know this seems excessive, but we don’t want our clients information leaked to the world.

At one point, I heard/read you would recover data from a hard drive with as many as 6-7 previous formats performed.

I’m glad it’s back. I’m sure whoever stole this thing has been sweating bullets.

Although the data hasn’t been accessed on this pc, I wonder if it was copied off to another device?? Likely not, but we will never know I’m sure.

Good thing that they found it!!! I saw in one article that the VA is offering free credit monitoring for one year to the affected people. Pretty nice of them after all they’ve done!! But, having it sure wouldn’t hurt, one article I read said the will stop offering it possibly after more tests are done on the recovered computer.
