I think we’ve all heard at one time or another that pike don’t feed at night. Bull hooey! This past full moon on Mille Lacs was a great example of how rules are never universal in nature because when we’d get a decent moon over-head, the pike would come out to feed and we even documented a real noticeable spurt of activity at or around 3 AM most nights on the water. At those times the walleye would kinda dry up and then we’d get a brief flurry of pike activity and we’d boat as many as 6 pike in a short amount of time.
I can only imagine what we would have run into if we would have taken the opportunity to ‘up-size’ from our husky jerks to something a bit more robust.
This first dandy comes out to us from Chris Tuckner. This dandy was taken while fishing with Dale and Karen Anklam on October 7. Nice fish bud.
This second pike was taken on a craw colored #12 husky jerk while SLOOOOWLY trolling in 12′ of water and was caught by Todd Berghoff while fishing with James Holst. This pic hardly does this fish justice. I learned several things from this past trip…. one of which is to buy a much longer fish ruler! Nice fish Todd!
So has anyone else had any success with pike at night? I’d assume encounters like this might be much more common on lakes with very clear water as pike aren’t reknown for their night vision…. but I guess that would just be one of those rules just waiting to be contradicted.
