About 12 years ago, I had a sizeable snake collection so I’ve learned a quite a bit about these critters. Although I forget the proper name for this snake, i do know that it certainly is a water snake common to the upper midwest. It’s one of 3 species that dwell mostly in an aquatic environment.

While this snake is harmless, they do not acclimate to human handling very well and their saliva is acidic to our skin. The cuts will take longer to scab over and it can really burn like a bad rash. There is medical treatment available if the reaction is serious enough.

In closing, they’re neat to see but don’t mess with them any more than necessary. If contact is unavoidable, it’s recommended that you only handle them with a snake stick and gloves.

    Happy nature viewing!

That is a beauty. I love snakes, pretty much for the fact that they eat rodents. God, I hate rats…Snakes are really cool, because they are so warm and dry to the touch. Most of our Minnesota snakes are harmless. There are bunches of rattlers in the southern bluffs areas of the Mississippi Valley region. When you learn more about snakes, it takes the fear and distain away….They really are a magnificent animal. By the way that is a northern water snake.

Hope the next “one” isn’t ONE of those!

I would be on the boat seat…next to my wife…squealing like a nancy!

I can’t get her to wear a pfd for nothing…I did have one on… as normal.

Can’t hardly tell her I won’t take her out if she doesn’t wear one…’cause she won’t go.

Some people have to learn the hard way.

That looks to me to be just like every other snake….the kind I would drive 20 miles out of my way to run over! People say they eat rats, fine but I don’t live in New York City, nor have I ever seen a rat….atleast not the 4-legged variety.

the coloration and pattern of this snake seems to indicate that it is a common milk snake… also its slender build is another indicator…. Id put my money on Milk Snake…. rather than Water Snake…
