Back Troll Turning Problem

I have been doing a little backtrolling to get some practice before our Canada trip. When the wind is blowing, I seem to be having trouble making a turn to the right. My 6hp kicker is on the right side, and doesn’t seem to turn as sharp to the right as to the left. Is there a trick to getting the boat to turn?

I assume you back trolling to go as slow as possable, well if the wind is blowing troll forward into the wind for better control. or try a drift sock!

You have a 6hp kicker so why back troll?

Any time you try to backtroll with a kicker you’ll turn better in one direction than the other since the kicker is mounted off-center. There is no fix. Try going forward or hop on the bow mount troller for precise control when the wind isn’t really whipping.

Unless you have a bow mount, your going to find that a brisk wind will blow your bow to the left and right making foward trolling tough if you want to stay on turns, edges, ect. If your just going to troll open water than you can get away with it. This is where having a tiller in the center while backtrolling gives you the advantage of a wheel boat in windy conditions.

some short, narrow boats do not back troll well. Due to weight distribution on the sides.

Meaning that you are sitting on the starboard side of the boat, while back trolling, the boat is not level in the water.

Thanks for the tips guys. I have been using the bow mount to help turn the boat when it is windy, just seeing if there were any other tricks. I have a big, deep and wide boat, but maybe I need to experiment with weight distribution also.
