Wright county has been on fire for panfish as of late. With the walleye opener limiting the number of folks targeting panfish, I took the day to go out and hit some of my local favorites with good friend Chad. We started off the day hitting some of the places that I was finding fish a few weeks prior. I was very shocked to find NO fish in any of thses spots. Bays that were holding fish were starting to show signs of weed growth, and lots of it. We moved on to work just outside some of the bays, and we were rewarded with a handfull of panfish. The fish had moved just outside the bays and were hanging on downed timber, close to the deeper water. I was still finding fish in 3-6 feet of water, so they were still shallow. My normal approach is to us a small jig with a fathead or crappie minnow. This day the fish wanted nothing to do with minnows, it was all about plastics this day. Berkley Power Wigglers were the key on this day. Once we got that figured out, the fish were going very good for about 2 hours. I kept 6 crappies for a fish fry that night and everything else was released. When I got home, my son, Alex was waiting to help daddy back the boat into the driveway. This is an interesting thing to witness. Having a 3 year old help you back up a boat is a challenge in it self. By the time the boat made it into the driveway, the lights were on, the radio was cranked, and the horn had been honked a few times. I am sure that my neighbors all love when I come home with the boat, but if the little man is having fun that is what it is all about. We got out of the truck and had to go see what was in the livewell…..Now play time starts for the little guy, and daddy gets to sit back and watch. I just love to come home with fish and watch my son check everything out. He is so interested in everything to do with fishing. This weekend was the first time that I got him to lip a crappie, and you can tell by the look on his face, that he was almost as proud as his daddy. It was a great day to be on the water, but it was an even better day to spend with my child, teaching him about the sport that I love so much. If you have a young one, and are looking for some good panfish action, Wright County is a good place to start. This 1st picture is Alex learning how to lip a crappie, it took a few times for him to get it.
