Favorite Daughter got chewed out…

So I get a call from the favorite daughter…almost in tears.

Seems that she was in New Richmond looking for the Walmart and a fella in a pick up had a green LEFT turn arrow…but forgot to yield to on coming traffic (that had a green light too).

I hate to lump all young female drivers into the “ditsy, not paying attention group” so I won’t…but that is my daughter. I’ve talked with her about it many times…Keep (at least) one hand on the wheel…don’t talk with your hands while your driving…leave yourself an out…and just because the speed limit in 70…doesn’t mean you HAVE TO DRIVE 70!

So…after finding out the she and her boyfriend and the other driver are ok…sprained thumb…I start on the I told you so’s…as this is the second time someone has pulled out in front of her and she’s creamed them…

So you ask…If they pull out in front of her, how is it her fault? All I can say is that “many” of the accidents can be avoided by an attentive driver…and she isn’t that.

    Then…

I find out her boy friend was driving….

As much as I complained about seat belts, I believe she would have been hurting today with out them and the air bags.

    Car is totaled.

    Looks bad enough from here

Glad to hear she is ok.

Might want to consider the next vehicle to be a 1 ton van with a cattle guard?

Can’t say enough about seatbelts! They are a pain until you get into an accident.

Glad the Daughter is fine! But if someone pulled in front of me and I hit them………… They’re gonna get an earful from this guy! Not the other way around! I don’t care if there’s an out or not!

Glad to hear that she is OK.

Even though she was not driving I would suggest a defensive driving course for everyone, some insurance companies have lower rates with one.

I am from New Richmond and when the green left turn arrow is on it is not green for the on coming traffic. Someone was definitely not paying attention. That sure looks like a lot of damage for a 45 mile an hour zone. Glad to hear that everyone is OK, which is the main part.

    Hey B…

VERY happy to hear that they were both OK. You can always replace/repair a car. And maybe the two of them will see this as a message from the Lord: “Be a better driver!” I know He sent me a few messages in my youth..

Again glad to hear that they are OK.

    Brian,

I’m glad they are okay. You have my BP up this morning, with your post. Jordan (our oldest) turns 16 on June 12.

He passed his first car on a country road Sunday. I’m stunned he didn’t clip the car he was passing with the hitch. Then he “stopped” at a stop sign adjacent to a very busy highway down here (hwy 2). Actually, he misjudged the intersection and stopped ON hwy 2.

I’m letting him get his license, but not letting him drive alone for awhile.

My daughter had the same problem of preceiving what to do in some situations too, like its always thier fault, which alot of it was. I often told her to be a defensive driver and let traffic do what its going to do and for her to just stay out of thier way and watchout for potential bad situations but she said if its there fault then its not mine. I said what do you want to have to do call a wrecker? her answer was if its not my fault then its not my fault. Ya its not your fault but who wants to sit in traffic while the wrecker comes and do you even have comprehensive to fix your car or would they total it. What are you going to do for transportation until you can buy another car and i believe none of this sunk in much. When i was her age it was totally cool to stay out of an accident so you could roll around on friday and saturday nights and whenever, guess its thier attitude today of being bulletproof and just go for it, Shes gotten better at driving and listening and i guess time will only tell.

Solution: Just take her Cat fishing, then she can’t get into trouble!

Similar things happened to my kids when they were in there teens and early twenties. But God willing they worked throught it without any serious accidents, except the one to your/their pocket book as insurance costs rise.

I also remember having two accidents in two weeks in 1965. To say the least my dad was not happy and the insurance company cancelled me. The happy ending is since 1965 I have not been involved in an accident; hopefully your daughter’s driving future will be the same.

Brian, GLAD to hear everyone was OK!! That is the most important part. Will the sprained thumb affect the thumbing of the spool? 690reece

If there truely is a green left turn arrow at the same time as a green light for oncoming traffic, somebody needs to look into that. You should report that to some government agancy.

    That doesn’t seem right.

Never seen that in my neck of the woods.

RB hit the nail on the head! It can’t happen that thru-traffic has a green light as well as opposing traffic having a green left turn arrow….pure suicide, and if that was the case something is up with those lights. Opposing traffic turning left can do so on a green light after first yielding to thru traffic, but they definately DO NOT have a green left turn arrow at the same time as thru traffic has a green light. Too any extent, glad everyone is O.K.

In checking the details a little closer…there is no “green arrow”…just a green light…

It’s going to be interesting when we get the police report. If the other driver gets a fail to yeild citation…my daughter gets her deductable 100% refunded.

That would be $500. she doesn’t have.

As has been said, cars can be replaced, kind of.
Don’t be in a hurry to settle anything w/Insurance company.
Yes I speak from experience, 2 years ago, daughter coming home from work about midnight, small mustang full of kids and one adult in back seat, pulled out from stop sign right in front of her pickup, she was doing 50 in 55 zone. Both vehicles totaled, they were charged, took almost 18 months to get all bills paid

We had that “talk” 2 years earlier when a drunk rear ended her truck on ice

    I won’t even discuss #1 son

Okay, let’s get the story straight here because obviously my Dad wasn’t listening when I told him what happened.
    1. I have never hit anyone. Some young gentleman rear ended me at a red light. Obviously not my fault.
    2. Bob was driving. I was not. So technically I did not have to be attentive. Anyways, we were on our way to Super Walmart in New Richmond when we decided to check out the rest of the town. The next light down is by Pamida. We had a green light and so did the oncoming traffic. But the guy coming from the opposite direction was going to make a left hand turn. He failed to yield. He thought he could make it through the intersection before we got there. Obviosly from the pictures you can tell that did not happen. He was cited for failure to yeild at a green light. The cop also said that this happens all the time at that intersection. In my opinion, which isn’t much, put in a green arrow and maybe there won’t be so many accidents there. At that being said……again, it was not my fault..
    P.S.

    Hahahahha!!! Brian….

How did she get in? Is she a member here too?? Hehe.

Yeah…I must admit, she was not at fault cos she is not driving. But sounds like neither is her boyfriend. But whether the accident could have been avoided with more attentive and defensive driving, we cannot say….that was why it is an accident. But I hear you about telling the more inexperienced drivers to be more attentive and defensive in their driving. And if the speed limit is 70, indeed, you DO NOT HAVE TO DRIVE at 70. I think a lot of it boils down to impatience. I have been there and done that and am more patient now. I think it is better for the soul. Hehe.
