Motor Question

I have an older 15 horse Evinrude that ran great 3 months ago on the cold Mississippi but now when I run it it has a severe lack of power. I changed plugs and the problem persisted. While out on the lake last week I pulled each plug wire while it was running to see if I could narrow it down to a single cylinder and the motor ran exactly the same either way. I need some help from you motor savvy individuals please. We’ll be heading up north in two weeks and the motors low profile allows access to a small lake that we will NEED to fish Thanks in advance!

I hate to reply to my own post but might it be a fuel filter? For some reason this didn’t occurred to me until a minute ago.

    yep fuel starvation.

Check your filter for sediment build up.

yeah, my guess would be a fuel filter. Not sure what year it is, some have a glass bulb that the filter sits in, and some have a wire mesh screen that filters it out. Remove the streen, and blow the crap out of there. If that doesn’t fix it, junk in the carb would be the next source.

Lack of fuel = lack of power.

My kid loves there motors. If you ever decide to sell send me an E Mail mail and I will call you. Regarding repairs it is almost always, the fitler, gas hose (YES) or carb.

Good luck, we love these motors.

I took the filter out tonight and it was very clean but I blew it out and will see how it goes on Friday when I’ll probably have to swap motors again Thanks for the input though

If you have the standard Johnson/evenrude red steel tank, it too has a small screen filter on the pickup tube.

Just a follow-up on this problem to go to archive for reference in the future for others:

After exhausting fuel related problems as best I could I brought the motor to a repair shop. The problem was the powerpack. The powerpack, being a solid-state component, is very difficult to test. It cost about $60 for the part and of course the additional $60 for labor .

I’ve had a bunch of these apart, sounds like the main jet in the carb is plugged. Once the air intake is removed the carbs are easy to remove and clean out. If this isn’t it try priming it while driving the fuel pump could be bad but my guess would be carb.
