Word of Caution

I was up on the Pond on friday. I had gone to the casino landing to launch. When I returned from fishing I came back to find that some must have taken a liking to my spare tire cover. I don’t leave anything in the truck for these jerks to take but a spare tire cover…come on. I just don’t get it. Just a word of warning, I guess you need to take your spare tire cover off at the landing too.
The fishing was good in the AM until the wind stopped, and then the bite slowed way down. We got into some nice fish rigging with big leeches and long snells(8-10 feet). We got a few on cranks too. It was a good day to be on the water…just a bad way to end the day with a theif. I hope that some ranger owner enjoys his new tire cover….

That landing has always been horrible. Busted up vehicles, shot out or busted out windows. Vandalism. Theft. It is a convenient landing but you do take your chances when you leave your vehicle there unattended.

Never again will I use that landing. I have never had any issues in the past. Once bitten twice shy…..

I guess it could have been worse, but that kind of thing among fisherman just makes me mental……

I highly doubt it was another fisherman. Remember, you are on reservation property, goverened by reservation law. Need I say more?

I don’t think it was a Ranger owner or a fisherman that stole your cover, unless of course you consider one that “fishes” with a net or spear a fisherman. I’ve sat at that landing waiting for my turn to launch and watched a couple vehicles with those funny liscense plates, you know the ones, scoping out the goods. I pulled out of there in a hurry and have NEVER been back! I exclusively use private resort landings now, heck they have better, deeper landings anyway.

I have been a victim at one of those “Private Resort” Launches also.

But it wasn’t the Tire Cover. It was the Spare tire and mount.

$200 later I had it back but it pissed me off. That was the reason I went to a “Private Resort” in the first place.

I don’t mean to start any crap here……But those last two posts seem a little quick to jump on the ball blaming someone they suspect based solely on where the landing is. I’ve used that access many times and it is no different than any other access anywhere else. Unfortunately there are jack@sses who will do things like that no matter where you go.

I was going to say I’ve heard of people missing their spare tire from under the trucks. They crank them down and take the full sized tire and they take any spare off of your boat….ya gotta love the theif…

I will also stand behind my statement. Perhaps it was you that jumped the gun or perhaps I did not make my self clear enough. BirdDog said to use a “Private Resort Launch” . I did and still had my stuff taken. I do back your statement about “bad people” being everywhere. That was kind of my point when I said, “I had my stuff taken form a Private Resort Launch”.

It wasn’t actually your post I was referring to…It was the two previous blaming it on fish spearers and the like.

Law enforcement drives through there all the time. Give them a wave and stop and talk to them. Ask them if they see any issues with vandals / thefts in that lot. Then ask them who’s responsible… they’ll tell you.

Of course there’s theives no matter where you go, I won’t dispute that. I’ll also stand behind my comment. I’ve sat at that landing and watched the cars full punks scoping out stuff to steal and those vehicles full of punks had Res. plates. Play the odds, do you really think it’s the fisherman? Usually fisherman take pride in their equipment and understand what it takes to obtain the equipment we have, chances are they have more respect than to steal.

If it’s not the fisherman stealing it’s locals, if it’s locals, it’s punks off the Reservation, after all the Res housing is right up the road!! Tourists or locals doing the stealing…hmmm…that’s a tough one??

There’s really nothing gained by arguing about who’s doing it. Ask the people responsible for policing the area and you’ll know what some of the guys that visit this site have also been told. The reason behind the post was to vent a little (very understandable) and to warn others. Hopefully this post will give people the info they need to make an informed choice.

    Moving on?

My post was just to vent and warn people about this problem. I may have been a little to quick to point the finger at a fellow fisherman because I just don’t see what someone would want a ranger spare tire cover for other then their own boat. Who knows what drives these people to do this kind of thing. My bad, to jump the gun and assume that it was another fisherman….you know what happens when I assume………

I guess from now on I just need to bring the big NATIVE with me fishing….Right Dan

The Crestliner is gonna look aweful cool with a new spare tire cover I bought off Ebay today.

Sorry Bob, just trying to lighten the mood. Every time I use the ramp, I anticipate something either broken or missing when I return to the ramp. Knock on wood, I’ve been luck. Last fall MikeW and I were the last ones on the lake out of that ramp. We pulled in at 3ish. I was sure I would have A/C for the ride home that night.

I’m pretty religous about putting everything under my seats, cell chargers everything. No change in site, no clothes anything. Just last fall when I pulled in at 5PM, broad daylight, there was a blazer with a window missing and a cell phone gone. The old boy’s comment “I didn’t think anything would happen during the day here.”

I guess its better minus a tire cover that a 42″ muskie in the livewell…..

I hope you did not pay more then $16.00 on e-bay for it. It was not that it cost me much money, just the fact that it happened. I am thankful that you all have shared your experiences with me, because I for one, will not use that access again, not that it will prevent it from happening again in the future, but I know one guy who will have to add one more thing to the checklist when launching the boat…note to self…take off tire cover

OK….I think it sort of makes it not worthwhile to have a tire cover if you have to think about it and take it off everytime you leave the trailer unattended or at a boat launch park. I think it would be better not to have it in the first place or to get a cheap one and forget it, or find one that is “lockable”?? Theoretically, thieves can strike anywhere. I know it is ridiculous that someone would bother to steal a USD16 dollar tire cover, but, hey…thank your lucky stars that was all that they stole. I think it was one of those unlucky things and should not be happening regularly. I for one had chrome valve caps stolen from my truck. Cost only like a buck and 28 cents. Still got stolen tho’. Maybe some kid. But heck…not gonna break a sweat…but same response as you…who would wanna steal such a thing?

I also will not use that landing anymore, because a couple of buddies have been broken into at the landing as well. I have gone to the pay to launch places and have not been hit yet, so I will keep doing it. It just seems to ease my mind a little, knowing that mostly fisherman are at those places.

Four years ago I was fishing out of that launch (Sha-bosh-kung) and watched as a group of Native thugs shot out the parking lot light with a .22 rifle. I called 911 from the boat as I really didn’t care to go ashore while they were shooting. When the cops arrived, I went to shore to talk to them. After shooting out the light, it appeared they lined up the windows of a bunch of parked trucks, and pulled the trigger to see how many windows they could get. It went through 4 vehicles. Mine was number 5. Luckily, it did not hit my Suburban. If I remember right, Dee Zee got hit there…I am not sure though.

YEP….I got hit there 4 times in 4 years. Smashed windows, stolen items from the cab…the one that got me the most was I bought my brand new GMC Crew cab 3/4 ton pickup and it was a week old and some one there threw a large rock right on top of the hood……

Why I kept going back…..convenience and stupidity. I have spoken to the local police there many times and each time I was told the juvenile local native americans were the culprit of most of the activity.

A couple years ago, Farmers insurance had 50 claims from that access alone in the first 3 week of fishing opener.

The local police do know who is doing this…but can’t seem to catch these guys. I’m not 100% convinced they have put much effort into catching them either.

I can tell you from growing up close to several reservations. We are hated by some native americans, notice I said some(kind of like bass boats ). This hatred gets passed down from generation to generation. It’s no different than the “white trash” who live off welfare and keep popping out kids. Some individuals within a culture will always be a drain on society. I personally feel it’s this secture of the culture that are the most vocal about not integrating into society, yet they are the most detrimental to the perception of the culture.
