Heading up there Friday and am taking my boat up there. Hopefully we make it. Wondering if anyone has ever fished the area and could recommend some lakes for big pike and walleyes. They must have some sort of landing so I can get my boat in (mr. pike 17). Kind of a remote place but hopefully some one can help. Thanks. ma deuce

We drove up to Flin Flon from the mid 70’s through the mid 80’s.We went through an outfitter and flew into Sask.Your in for a long drive. The walleyes don’t get as big up there, too far North. If your into Northern, there should be some big ones.I remember getting snowed on in early June and mid-Sept.

We drove up past Flin Flon and fished Kississing for two years. The guys I went with have been fishing there for 30 years. Great lake for pike and eyes. I didn’t think you could catch pike and eyes using spoons and just cast all day, but we did and had a blast. No live bait needed.

Been to Kississing a number of times and had some great fishing experiences. I know there is a landing on the east side. Not exactly Thompson but halfway close. Awesome fishery! Unbeleivable trophy northern and walleye numbers. Largest walleye we’ve caught was only around the upper 20’s, but you can reel in 40″ northerns until your arms cant take it anymore on the right part of the lake. I think you will probably do fine no matter what lake you hit up there.

That is one heck of a drive. Its been a few years since I have been up that direction hauling boats so things may changed but I know we always hauled along a number of 5 gallon gas containers (anywhere from 3-5 per truck) that we filled up after we crossed the border. That far north is not a good place to run out of gas, plus the gas was quite a bit cheaper down south. Probably more so now.

I’d get a lake map of where ever you fish up there too. Rocks seem to pop up out of nowhere and eat lower units like its their job if your not careful.

I’ve been to the Thompson area each July/August for the past 16 years. We fish the Rat River System. It’s about 2 hours NW of Thompson on HWY 391. Launch where the swanee crosses 391. Great pike fishing, and tons of walleye when you find em. There is more water than land it seems like up there, so you won’t have a problem finding fish! Let us know how you do.

We go West out of Ponton rather than going north to Thompson. There is a site dedicated to the area. Xtremesportfishing. Dave Colibaba is a guide in the area who lives in Thompson, he is the admin of the site. Even on our bad trips, we catch many Northerns over 40″ and several of trout over 28″. Manitoba seems to be very friendly to Americans. We have had great experiences with the MNR, nice guys and not really out to get you, just making sure you are following the rules. We do normally get torn down on the way back into the US though in Pembina by the US Fish and Wildlife, so be sure you are legal. Read the regs carefully as there are lots of lakes with special regs. Don’t forget the camera. Good luck!
