Ok folks time has come to bite the bullet and buy “Quality” Rain Gear. Choices so far are Cabelas Guide Ware and Typhoon series gear. Whats the best set out there for around $300???

Guide wear is the best, hands down, but I’m not sure it will come in under $300.
May 16, 2006 at 3:11 am #446559I just got a new set. $219 for the parka. $189 for bibs. Order on-line or from catalog and get a free Guidewear bag.
The new style parka will run $319 but its more than what you need. Some guys think its to bulky and didnt like it.
May 16, 2006 at 3:22 am #446562Be sure to check the bargain cave. From time to time guys find a slightly used set of guide wear in there with the price slashed.
shaylaPosts: 1399May 16, 2006 at 3:51 am #446580As stated, Guidewear is the BEST.
One option, to keep costs a little lower, check out the bargain cave at Cabelas….usually atleast 2-5 sets in there for a reduced price. Heck, if they’re just stained a little who cares. They are gonna have fish-slime and crawler crap all over them anyways.
May 16, 2006 at 4:12 am #446585Yeah, I will agree with Derek..
I have the new parka system parka…I like my older style insulated parka better. However, it is nice to have the systems parka..because it can double as a spring jacket, with no lining. I have used it a ton already this spring..and will continue to do so into the summer. The fleece wind stopper/gore-tex zip out jacket is also a nice added bonus..but when you wear it all together, it is way too bulky!
May 16, 2006 at 11:20 am #446603Cabela’s guideware is some great stuff, but don’t doubt the typhoon raingear. I have never had a problem with anything made by Gamehide. Last summer I strongly considered buying a set, but didn’t have the money. I am confident that it will last as long as the guidewear, but I don’t know how the service would be if something go wrong.
May 16, 2006 at 12:06 pm #446613Cabela’s also has lower grade rain suits from the guide wear. There are sets that are $200 and even $100.
It all depends on what you need.
Be aware that ALL of Cabela’s rainsuits basically have a “no-questions asked” return policy……..
May 16, 2006 at 12:18 pm #446618Thanks for starting this thread. I am looking for a new rain suit as well. Not willing to spend that kind of cash though. Not because I don’t want to but gotta justify the purchase with the amount of time I am on the water in inclement weather.
There is mention of other quality cabela gear than guidewear. What are their names so I can check them when I’m “relaxing” .

May 16, 2006 at 12:31 pm #446623I’ve got a set of Stearns “guide wear” and it’s lasted me 5 years now. I’ve had to waterproof it a couple times. It is starting to show it’s wear/tear though. This product would be a good alternative to the price of Cabelas stuff. Also check out Gander’s line of rain suites. They have decent stuff for a moderate price.
What will I buy next, guide wear, just because of weekends like the last.
May 16, 2006 at 12:39 pm #446625Bass Pro Shops 100 MPH Gore-Tex! It’ll run you about $450 for the set though . But well worth it!
I haven’t seen anyone mention gear in your price range yet. The Bass Pro Gore-Tex Ripstop gear is very nice. I have worn the same jacket ($120) for 5 years with no maintenence whatsoever. The gear is not bulky at all and allows you the freedom to preform as if you weren’t wearing rain gear.
I did upgrade to the 100MPH bibs last year, but before that I loved the BPS G-TX Ripstop bibs as well ($120). Dry and comfortable…
May 16, 2006 at 12:43 pm #446628JUST JUMPING IN HERE,
ONE,I DO NOT HAVE A EXPENSIVE SET OF RAINGEAR, BUT I HAVE FISHED WITH A COUPLE THAT HAVE, AND AFTER PEELING OFF GEAR AFTER THE FISHING, I CAN SAY THAT MY FROG TOGGS RAINGEAR HAS PERFORMED JUST AS WELL AS OTHER GEAR I HAVE SEEN, IT IS VERY LIGHT , BUT WIND RES. BREATHABLE, (NOT SWEATING TO DEATH UNDER IT) AND IT IS AT LEAST ONE THIRD OF THE PRICE. I BOUGHT IT BIG ENOUGH TO FIT OVER SOME HEAVER COATS BUT WHEN I JUST WEAR THE FROG TOGGS IT IS VERY COMFORTABLE, JUST MY CHEAP .02.May 16, 2006 at 12:45 pm #446629How about the new frog togs suit? I don’t think its insulated though.
toothycrittersPosts: 253May 16, 2006 at 2:00 pm #446661how about Gander Mtn’s Tech20 series??? I have a parka and bibs which I’ve used for a couple of years now and would highly recommend them. for about $200 for both….
May 16, 2006 at 2:44 pm #446686I have just gotten a set of GAMEHIDE TYPHOON Rain Gear. I will be putting this rain gear to the test this Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. I can not give you an opinion on how they actually perform against the Cabelas Guidewear quite yet (it will be coming). I loved and still love my Cabelas Guidewear. However, I do find myself seeing this Typhoon Raingear as some quality made stuff and I’m anxious to give it a whirl. In another month or so I can give you an opinion, but I know they do make some top of the line stuff @ Gamehide, like Mr. Fife stated previous. I looked on their online store and a set of Typhoon raingear would cost you about $328.00 plus tax. Click on the red text above to go to that link. If anyone has any questions that they would like answered about Gamehide Rain Gear or any of their clothing line, shoot me a PM and I would gladly get you an answer straight from Gamehide, if I can not answer it myself.
Edit: With talking to Steve @ Gamehide ths morning, I asked them about their return policy there and here is a quote from my email. Steve wrote, “As far as a return policy goes…if it leaks we will take it back no questions asked. We stand behind our product 100% and always have.”
May 16, 2006 at 3:08 pm #446695I picked up the Gander guidewear on April 30th this year. I have only used it twice and have stayed very dry each time. I paid $79.99 for the bibs and $89.99 for the jacket.
May 16, 2006 at 3:09 pm #446696Cabelas Guidewear…..
As far as justification goes….it only takes one trip of getting cold wet and miserable and you will regret spending the money and getting great rain gear.Someone mentioned inclement weather….buying raingear to use only when it is raining…yeah you might be able to get away with a cheaper set. The thing is I use my guidewear all the time whether it is ice fishing or open water or whatever I am doing outside in rain, wind or sun. It is very comfortable, extremely durable, functional and worth every penny.
Just my $0.02
JBMay 16, 2006 at 3:24 pm #446706It has been said a dozen time already….Cabelas Insulated Guidewear…..I used not only as rain gear but also cold weather gear as well!!! Take ice fishing…I hardly ever fish inside a house…I use my Under Armour Cold weather long johns with Jeans then my insulated bibs…for a top I use the Under Armour long sleve cold gear top with a long sleve shirt and a hooded sweatshirt then my insulated guidewear jacket…I fish outside on the ice with that all year long in any wind, snow, sleet, whatever and stay dry and warm!
Fishing the full moon bite on Mille Lacs in late October early November, it can be cold and windy…once again on comes the guidewear cuts the wind down and also keeps you warm…
I know the price is hard at first but when your out fishing in those conditions its well worth the price….ask anyone of these guys who has the guidewear its more than just rain gear!!!!!! Its really used at all times when fishing just to stay warm at times!!! That is what I use it for to stay dry and warm even if its not raining!!!My $.02
May 17, 2006 at 4:54 am #446940I also have a set of Gander Guide wear. I’ve worn it year around, have never had it soak through, even in last weekends weather. I have the uninsulated so I can layer up under it. So far so good, and the price was under $200 for the bibs and coat.

guidewear when its cold and frogtoggs when its hot
Bingo love the frogg toggs.
May 22, 2006 at 1:27 pm #448051I have a set of Cabelas insulated Guidewear and use them from Sept through about mid May. Good stuff of course, but too warm for the summer.
Had a set of Helly Hanson rain gear for the warm weather that worked just super for the last 5-6 seasons. I would not hesitate to buy another set, but you just don’t find the HH on the racks too often.
I just purchased a set of the Gander Mountain TecH2O Guide Series rain gear. As mentioned they were $79 for the bibs and $89 for the Jacket. Not too expensive in my opinion. I gave them a good workout over the last week on Mille Lacs and they do keep you dry. So far I am very satisfied with the suit. Of course, time will tell if they hold up to a lot of abuse over the season.
