How to Drive Boat in 2-3 foot waves? (10mph wind)

Ive been on some big waters with my 1750 (and Nisswa 17 footer before this) and I try to get going to plane in the trough (low between the waves) then cut over across the tops when speed is up… then its a matter of comfort and either topping the waves or getting the cadence right to provide a little more comfort… from crest to crest.

One suggestion especially for larger waters in the cold… be sure to have a pair of clear goggles… with the cold water splashing you in the face it makes it hard to breath at times let alone drive… the goggles take away at least one of the burdens… I lost mine overboard on Superior when a wind came up that was not in any forcast… made it back but for the first times in my life I was truley scared in the boat that we may not make it back safely.

Gave a try out today at Lake Peppin with 1 foot or maybe 1.5 footers. Was able to go up to 40mph but would very occasionally hit a wave which would pound the boat a little. I had the trim set both at half and at one-quarter up. I thought the ride was OK, not as good as I thought that a deeper V in a 17.5 should be doing, tho’. Considering that, I do not think that I would be able to go much faster in 2-3 footers, or I am still not driving it right….. hmmmm…

    That sounds about right.

Go the speed your comfortable with.

I don’t know anyone who would go 40 mph in 3 foot waves.
