Question on 4-stroke motors

I’m going to buy a new motor this summer for the flat bottom I am about to buy and I would like a new motor and since mercury quit making 2-strokes, i thought about a 4-stroke but am concerned about the weight because I fish a shallow river all the time. So my question is How much heavier would a 4-stroke be in a 25 hp than a 2-stroke?

Doesn’t anyone make a 25 hp 2 stroke any more?

If you have to go 4 stroke, check out the manufaturers web sites and compare weights.

You’d be surprised who has the lightest 4 stroke 25 hp motor.

I did a quick look around and I couldn’t find a 25 Hp 2 stroke motor available from Mercury, Evinrude or Johnson. They’ve all gone 4 stroke. Yamaha still offers a 25 HP 2 stroker for comparison.

    Mercury 25 Hp – EFI 4 Stroke

    Dry Weight (lbs.): 157

    Yamaha 25 Hp – Carburated 2 Stroke

    Dry Weight (lbs.): 106

So your answer is “about 50 lbs.” On a flat, that would seem to potentially be a consideration.

Mercury’s 25HP Foustroke weighs 157lbs. I don’t think that’s too bad. If you had a longer fuel hose and put your gas tank towards the front that may help to distribute some of the extra weight in the boat.

    Good luck in your decision.

Mercury, Yamaha and Honda all come in real tight when weights are compared. Yamaha is the lightest at 143 Lbs. Johnson is the heaviest at 216 Lbs.

I would stay away from the Four Strokes with Two Cylinders. They have a counter balance, dummy cylinder. I have had heard problems with them. Mercury use to make one and dropped it from there line.

In this category find a good used two-stroke. either 20HP or 25HP. I am not a big Merc fan but a 20HP Merc two-stroke would move your Jon Boat along quite nicely. The 25 HP four-strokes are just extremely heavy.
